A. Clothing Wear shirts which cover the shoulders and long trousers at all times. Wear long sleeve shirts or protective sleeves when working on or near hot surfaces. B. Head--Scalp Hard hats (ANSI Z89.1-1981). in good condition and worn properly are required under the following conditions. 1. In any area posted as a "Hard Hat Area" 2. Beneath any overhead work, including areas below ladders (e.g. groundman working with man on ladder), scaffolds, open gratings, and other openings. 3. While working in vessels or manholes. (See Contract Administrator for requirements). 4. In any other area where a head bumping hazard is present. Metal hard hats and "Bump" hats are not acceptable. C. Eves and Hearing 1. Types of Eye Protection a. Safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1) must be worn while doing mechanical/elec trical work, while in an area where mechanical/electrical work is being done, and in areas where chemicals are stored or handled (which includes, but is not limited to all laboratories). Side shields, as directed by the Contract Administrator, must be worn in some operating areas. Site visitor "Guest Goggles" are not acceptable for work ing eye protection. - 16 - b. Coverall gogglesor full face shields jre required for power chipping, grinding, when removing or installing ceiling panels, and when drilling or working above shoulder height where chips or particles might enter the eye. e. Full face shields are required when handling molten materials, such as lead or tar. d. Special purpose protection is required when handling acids, caustics, and gritblasting. Consult the Contract Administrator. 2. Hearing Hearing protection is required in areas where noise levels exceed 90 dBA. Con tractor must notify the Contract Admin istrator and obtain approval to use equipment eenerating noise in excess ot 90 dBA. D. Fingers. Hands, and Wrists 1. Gloves suitable for the job being per formed must be worn when working unless the job can't be done wearing gloves or wearing the appropriate gloves increases the hazard. 2. Di-electric gloves certified for applicable voltage must be worn on all power line work or whenever contact is possible w ith energized circuits. Gloves must be in spected before each use and replaced if defective. E.
