During the past twenty-fiYe years our institution h been faced with a steadily increasing demand for.information on Industrial diseases of the lungs. Ve have carried on an extensive program of research based upon'the evidence of X-ray filas of the ch autopsy studies of deceased workmen, studies of industrial environae and animal experiments. We have tried to constitute ourselves a cle house for inforaation on such conditions and have carried on a prog? of education for pb/.sicians and-others who oust be informed to deal them. * . To accomplish these purposes ve have gradually as sembled a staff of Qualified specialists in various fields. Thirtee years ago the. capacity of the Laboratory buildings was doubled by tJ- addition of the John Black Wing; a gift of Kr. and Krs. Frank B. Bis of Kansfield, Ohio. Today ve are again overcrov/del and the existing staff has barely room to work. Ve are limited in the number and cht of the new proJectst that can be undertaken and yet ve are constantly being asked'to do more. ^ .. . The amount of investigation still needed in this f: would seem unlimited but the number of institutions -equipped to hsnc such problens is small indeed. Aside from the Laboratories of the Public Health Service in Eetheeda and the Harvard School of Public l the biological aspects of Industrial disease are receiving scant attention, . 00348 Mr. Sumner Simpson -2- Deccmber 11# 1945 * If the Saranac Laboratory is to continue its usefulness its facilities nust sain be increased; an addition to the building is ' essential and several nore key men must be added to the research staff. Income from new projects will be adequate for maintenance but v?e need $100,000 to build and equip the proposed addition. Being a tax exempt research institution we cannot make a profit from investigation and therefore, cannot build up reserves. In this dilemma I an turning to ny friends in Industry to* ask whether they will help me raise the necessary funds. Already I have received pledges from five industries amounting to $27,000 so that I have reason to feel optimistic. If Industry can help us to build a better workshop we will do our best to solve its hffilth problems. If this proposal seems reasonable to you I would deeply appreciate your bringing this natter to the attention of the officials of your company with a recommendation for a contribution to the buildir fund of the Saranac Laboratory.
