One s id e o f the a n im a ls ' backs was abraded a t one s i t e w ith a la n c e t s u f f i c i e n t l y deep to p en e tra te the stratu m corneum but not e n te r the derma to produce b le e d in g . The s k in o f the o th e r sid e was a llo w e d to remain i n t a c t . A 0.5 gm p o rtio n o f m a te r ia l was a p p lie d to an abraded and an in t a c t s k in s i t e on th e same r a b b it . Gauze patches were then p laced o v e r the tr e a te d are as and an im pervious m a te ria l was wrapped sn u gly around the trunks o f the anim als to hold the patches in p la c e . The wrapping was removed a t the end o f the twentyfo u r hour p e rio d and th e tr e a te d a re as were examined. Readings were a ls o made a f t e r seventy-tw o hours.
