Borcherding (<^| * f PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT AB-171 On Wednesday July 15, Mike Lindsay, Va. Div. of Occupational Health Compliance Officer made his final visit for monitoring purposes. His earlier visits were on 2/25/87, 4/9/87, and 5/6/87 as you are aware from prior correspondence. In addition to yesterday, one short previous visit was made on Sunday afternoon, 6/21/87 to check exposure levels during routine Baghouse main tenance. Mike checked 2 Millwrights and stayed approximately 2.5 hours. Yesterday's visit entailed an 8 hour monitoring of the Millwright assigned to the new Pelletizing Building, which is in the de-bugging stage and not yet fully automatic. Also, two operators were monitored for lead exposure in Strip Preform. No official results from any previous visits are yet available. Mike has informed us verbally however, that #16 Block Preform, monitored on 5/6/87, was above the P.E.L. at approximately .26. Based on this informal information the immediate action taken is. described in the enclosed memo. As to past surveys for lead. Prank Hernandez mentioned to you yesterday, that VDOH wants to know what prompted administrative controls in the strip product line (rotating operators every 2 hours) back in 1983. We have the information requested `by VDOH, the most recent Industrial Hygiene Survey for lead, which in fact prompted the above administrative controls. We will, as in the past, keep you up to date on the on-going VDOH survey. Also Diane Kidd,our plant nurse, is currently attending the N.I.O.S.H. Seminar on fiber counting. Sincerely, cJdc V.A.
