Many types of diexazlne dyestuffs have been disclosed in the patent literature. The first patents in this field were issued to the firm of Holster Luoiue and Bnaing from the years 1911 to'1914 (cf. OeriPat. 253,091'(6-25-11) t 253,761 (8-18-11)j 255,642 (11-7-11)j 257,834 (12-2-11), D.s. Pat. 1,065,063 (6-17-13)l Br. Pat. 8886/12). In resent years, the patent art in the dioxszine elass of dyes has been directed towards sulfonated and aminated dioxezines Which are soluble textile dyes. However, all the basic patents on the insoluble pigment dyestuff dioxaslnes have expired and manufacture of such products appear free from patent restrictions.

1. Four colors of the dioxasino elass have been prepared at Jaekson Laboratory and evaluated at Newark. These are Violet OX toners and lakes. Orange DX tenor. Scarlet BX toner, wed Maroon OX toner.
2. Violet OX ie a very strong, red and intense color compared to "Ponaol" Brilliant Violet 4RM. It is s unique shading eolor for CPC giving intense red sheds blues by mechanical mixture with the phthalooyanins sad Is compatible tlatborially with CPC in any proportion without objectionable dull ing. Violet DX permits the preparation of redder shads bines than can be ob tained with the "Poneol" Violet owing to the greater color intensity of the former. In fact, tinetorlally, Violet DX appears to poesees appreciable merit as a self-color. However, Violet DX has poor ligfetfastnese in tints in ' linseed oil containing vehicles where the linseed is present as free oil, and is, therefore, of no interest as a printing ink pigment. In paint systems containing no free linseed oil, Violet DX both as a self-color and as a shading color for CPC is as lightfeet and durable ae MPonsolH. Brilliant Violet 4RM.

3. The three red BX pigments evaluated are of little interest es
paint pignente. They are toe dull against standard osiers of similar depth. Scarlet DX sad Maroon 0X darken undesirably on outdoor exposure of full shade enamels. The three red 8K colors differ from Violet SX in one important respect, namely, stability and good lightfastnesa in linseed oil when exposed in the fadeometer. Orange OX la the most lightfast of the three. Orange OX is non-bleeding la linaeed oil and paint systems and very lightfast even in linaeed oil systems but too dull tinotorially to warrant further consideration. All the red OX pigmente are stable to baking in alkyd enamels, and stable to heat euro in linoleum. Both Scarlet OX and Maroon OX bleed objectionably in linseed oil, lacquer and alkyd enamels* As linoleum pigments, the OX reds are soapfacrt but too poor in lightfaetaees in tint for utilisation in this field. The OX reds have great tinting strength being about twice as strong as the strongest eto red manufactured at Newark. Orange OR and Maroon OX are being evaluated as reds for flesh tints by outdoor exposure since these colors have exceptionally good lightfastnesa in tints in varnish drier. Scarlet OX is inferior in lightfaetnees in tint',to either of the other OK reds.
4. Owing primarily to peer tinctorial properties, compered with current standard inorganic and organic pigmente, the Scarlet, Maroon and' Orange OX pigeent* are of insufficient merit to justify further interest. However, even though the fault# of Violet 1MC 7 reelude its acceptance for
general application, it nevertheless possesses sufficient merit ts be con sidered as a specialty color for possible use in the linoleum field.

The dlexasinee are a elasa of colored organic compounds many members of which are described in the journal and patent literature. They ean be prepared by several known methods, but the most important of thee technically is via condensation of an aromatic amine with an aromatic quinone in a high boiling solvent followed by ring closure. The simplest member of this type is trlpbsadlexa sine.

Humorous compounds of this striae have bsem obtained from bensoqulnene, toluoquinone, ehlorsnil, ate. with various aromatic amines capable of condensation and ring oloeure. Tbs dioxtuines which contain no solubilising or reactive sub stituents such as sulfonic, carboxylic, ataino, or hydroxyl groups are pigment dyestuffs which are practically inert chemically. The color range of this class of pigments is exceptionally wide extending from yellows end oranges through reds, maroons, blues end violets.
Four dtoxasine pigments prepared by condensation of chloranll with X3 -naphthyl-amine, anlllao, p-ehloro-o-snisidino, and p-phonetidine, res pectively, have been evaluated. Those products were prepared at Jackson laboratory and as a class are referred to as BX Pigments. The constitution and color of the four pigments under investigation ere as fellows*

While these colors have been known for many years, they have not been of interest as pigments sine# no finishing method was known which gave colors of good pigment properties. The dioxasines can be acid pasted with resultant suitable physical form, but otherwise are Wi&taB8dS$3, tinetorially. However, Jackson Laboratory has discovered that salt' milling these products results in a suitable pigment form aa evidenced by increased intensity and strength com pared to the uaoillod pigments. In general, these salt milled dioxasince possess about twice the tinting strength of the strongest aso colors manu factured at Newark. These salt milled products ore very bulky, soft pigments.
The four diohlorodioxasinea shewn above have been evaluated for lightfaetnesc, paint properties, bleed properties, and as linoleum colors. Several samples of Violet DX toners, and lakes on various substrate have been studied. Only tcacrc of the red SX pigments were investigated. The most interesting of the new pigments tinetorially it Violet TX. hesults are briefly summarized below for each of the colors. Outdoor exposures of these eolore in lacquer and enamels ere in progress (cf. Series 6744, 6752, 67*6, 67*9, 6794,6*24).

have bean finished by salt milling, tw by acid pasting, and one la a highly purified sample for comparison with the there for lightfastnesB, etc. Bight espies of extended Violet X on blase fins, "TX BAR" UH, "TI JW R-felO, and "TI ms* R-LL (R-&1Q), respectively have been prepared at Jackeon Laboratory by co-aeid pasting or oo-ealt Milling.
Salt-milled Violet OX toner ie etreager and more intense than the acid pasted types. The highly purified sample of toner (D-5620, MDD-741?) is very weak vs. either the salt-milled or acid pasted toners. The final sample ef Violet DX toner finished by salt sailing <0-5620, J-50-F-1) and prepared by the preferred Jeekson Laboratory process ie slightly duller and somewhat yellower than an earlier aanpla finished is the sane way (D-5327, J-59-F-72). Otherwise sll ef the toasr pigmenta have the earns properties.
Violet OX toner (aslt-millod) is a dark bronzy, bulky pigment. Tn full shade in varnish drier or paints it is a very dull bronse color of no intorest as such* Violet SX is tints is intense, red, and strong compered to the vat dye "Ponsel* Brilliant Violet 4RB, and is ef eoneiderablt interest' both as a eelf-color and as a shading pigment. is a shading color'for CPC, it produces intense red shade.blues by simple mechanical extension. Tn this respect, Violet RX is a unique shading color for the phthalocyanines being tinctorially compatible in any preportion without dulling. "Portsol" Brilliant Violet 4RS, now used as a shading odor for CPC, must be acid pasted with the CPC for good results. Violet DX can be used in larger quantities than the "Ponsol" Violet to give redder aid mere intense shades of CPC than heretofore obtainable. It has been evaluated as a shading pigment in paints and linoleum*
Violet OX is non-bleeding in linseed oil, water, dilute aside and alkalies, and 95^ ethanol. It does not blood in lacquer or alkyd enamele, air dried or oven baked, when overstriped with a white lacquer or enamel. Zt does bleed slightly in paraffin. As a linoleum oolor, Violet DX ie soapfast, end unaffected by dilute aside or alkalies.
In lightfbstnoss Violet OX shows variable behavior depending on the nature of the vehiele. In any vehicle, the full shade color is very lightfast. In tints (TiOg and 2n0) in linsasd oil, varnish drier and spar varnishes containing considerable free linseed oil, Violet RX has poor llghtfaetneee. Tints of Violet DX in synthetic vehicles such as lsoquers and alkyd and phenolic enamels are exceptionally lightfast both in the fadeometer and out doors exposure, being equal to "PoneelfBrilliant Violet. A 2.5^ Violet TJX/ 97.55C "TX PURE" R-610 tint in alkyd enamel after 6 aoe. Florida exposure shove only e slight fade. Red shade phthalesyaninee made with Violet RX are fully equal in lightfastness in these synthetic vehicles to "Moneetral" Past Blue 2R. The poor llghtfaetnese of Violet SX in linseed oil prohibits its use ae a printing ink pigment and in some paint systems ouch as linseed oil modified trim paints.
Is paint eysterna, Violet DX tends to body worse than phthaloeyanine tonere. The toner flocculates and separatee severely in lacquer and alkyd ' systems. Titanium dioxide tints of Violet DX toner, in laccuer and enamels, prepared by mechanical mixture of toner pigment with the prime white, flocculate and eoparate even more rapidly than CPC tints. Violet DX se a self-color or as a .shading color for blue pigments ie sensitive to baking in alkyd enamele. At 275*?., it dalle and weakens severely, and red shade bines containing the violet change to dull greenish blues. However, alkyd enamels containing Violet BX apparently can be baked at 200* te 225*?.# without serious alteration in shade. Thie sensitivity to baking is tho most serious drawback of Violet OX as a paint pigment.
As a linoleum eeler Violet ISC is of intoroet both as a self shade and especially as a shading eolor for blues, particularly CHJ. As noted abevo it in soepfeat and unaffooted by dilute soldo or alkalies in linoleum. It is stable to oure at 260*?. The lightfastness of Violet OX in tint' linoleum is not aa good ae that of the bettor "Haphthanil" type colors, but may be satisfactory for many patterns. Tint linoleums madewith *TJ PHIS* R-510 are mode lightfaet than those containing "TT TOR* IT. Ae e shading color for CPC in linoleum compositions, Violet M appears satisfactory and has not faded out objectionably.
With tho exception of a few paint properties, the Violet 9X lakes on various suobetrata have tho came characteristics ae the toner pigment. Then Violet DX la co-salt milled with TiOa or a TiOg/blanc fixe combination (*TX BAR* liH), the resultant lakes are non-flocculating in lacquer and enamels. However, only the lakes so prepared on straight Ti02 can be further diluted with additional TiOa without flocculation and separation of tho colored component. The lakes on "TJ PUSH" Mfch (for R-610) are poor in ligbtfaetnoes both in the fadeoaeter and outdoors in lacquer or alkyda. This ie due to tho base TiOs rather than any difference in tho colored pigment.
*- Violet DX lakes made by eo-aoid pasting or eo-ealt milling with blanPrixe have paint properties similar to dry mixes of the component pigmonte. These blano fixe lakes show no improvement in flocculation compared to equivalent mechanical tensions of toner.
The behavior of Violet DX in linseed oil end in baked enamel finishes is reminiscent of that of indigo. The failure of the OX pigments in thles oases doss net appear to bo due te impurities that might be present in the pigment since a highly purified cample of toner behaves in the earns way. Mild oxidation of tho toner pigment by a method offestive in improving the lightfastness of indigo (K-1B42) failed to improve the violet. It appears likely that these peer properties are inherent in tho nature of the compound.

Orange OX ie a light red toner which in very dark and dull v*; representative chrome oranges, organic orange pigments and soda Lithols. Tn maeetone, this pigment is nearer RT-525-D (manganese pigment of "Lithoeol" Red 28} in color than any ether rad in the Wewarfc range, but is very yellow in tint. Tho foregoing comparisons wore made in varnish drier. In enamels and laequer, Orange OX 1b a light dull red but not similar tinetorially te eny cadmium red. In linoleum, the pigment is a dull orange. Tinetorially, Orange OX, altho possessing great tinctorial strength, is not of much

interest being too dull compared to standard reds end oranges.
Orange ESI ts remarkably llghtfbst in full shade and tints both in the fadeometer, in Tarnish drier and in outdoors exposure in slkyd enamel. A 1*30 tint in ZaO (V.D.) faded only very slightly after 470 hrs. in tbs fadeometer. . This oolor is being evaluated in flesh tint shades for outdoorpesters.
Orange SI is practically as resistant to bleeding in ell type reagent a as Violet W tot dees Chow a. bleed in dilute eauetic. In baking enamels, it bleeds slightly shea overstriped with white enamel.
Orange 01 flocculates in lacquer and Oulttx and separates when tinted with TiOg. It is stable to baking, fell shade, in alkyd enamels at 2?5F.
As a linoleum color. Orange 01 is stable to cure, soapfast, and resistant to ehemieal action in dilute acids and alkalies. However, it fades badly in tint linoleum compositions.

Scarlet OX is a dull medium red of no tinctorial interest. It is poorer in lightfhstnese than Orange OX or Maroon OX. Tlnctorially it is a dull RT-492-0 (lffiJFT~*8A3-D) shade, tot has groat tinting strength. It bleeds in linseed oil and in baking enamels overstriped with white enamel. Scarlet OX bleed* in dilute eauetio, alcohol, add paraffin. It darkens badly, full shade, when exposed in the fadeometer.
As a paint pigment. Scarlet $JE has properties similar to Orange OX. It flocculates in lacquer and Dulux, On outdoor exposures, serious darken ing in full shade occur* in about 2 mos* in Florida in alkyd enamel.
Soarlot OX is a soapfast linoleum oolor tot has poor lightfhstness in tint linoleum compositions.

Tinetorially, this is the most interesting of the Red OX pigments. It is a very blue, very strong maroon similar to RT-499-B (Manganese of "Uthosol" Rubin# 3) in laequer and lighter and yellower then than tMoindige maroon, Rf-503-0. A blond of flp^mrooS M anl 20* Violet SKV altho duller, approximates RT-J03-D tinetorially*
Maroon HI |ns the poorest bleed properties of ny of the BX pig ments tested. It bleeds strongly in"linseed oil and in lacquer and alkyd enamels when overstriped with white. It also hleeds strongly in dilute caustic, alcohol and paraffin.
As a paint pigment. Maroon DX flocculates in laequer and enamels and separates in TiOg tints in these systsms. It is stable to baking tot darkens badly on exposure, full shade in alkyd, after 2 raos. in Florida.
