DOCUMENT DESCRIPTION: Memo with Unpublished Report & Sample Data Sheets - Air Quality in Engine Build-Up Shop
J a c k s o n v i l l e , Florida, July 29, 1981, M E 8 :j h a
Charles A . Mead, M.D. Chief Medical Officer
Subject: Air Q u a l i t y in the Engine Bui l d - U p Shop in W a ycross
On July 22, 1981, a r e q u e s t was made by Mr. O.G. Wood, Wayc r o s s Shop S u p e r i n t e n d e n t , to sample and e v a l u a t e air q u a l i t y in the Engine Bui 1d-Up S h o p . This r e q u e s t resulted
from a complaint filed by the local machinist union. The
primary concerns were asbestos exposure from gasket material and organic vapors from the solvent SCLI M0-8L.
The air sampling can be done at a cost of $750 to $850. This would provide the sampling media, extra pumps, and analysis. The analysis would be done by a certified i n d u s trial hygiene lab and is the m ajor cost. T h e s e costs must be paid by Waycross Shop or Mechanical Department funds.
Due to the nature of this study, from Labor Relations, Mechanical, and tc any sampling being done.
gui d a n c e is requested Law Departments prior

PCM = Phase Contrast Microscopy; 450 x magnification PLM = Polarized Light Microscopy with Dispersion Staining at 100 x magnification.
Percentages given are visual estimates based on volume. * The asbestos fiber count analysis could not be performed on samples 2542
and 2545 due to an excess of particulate matter on the filters. ** Sample 2544 contained heavy particulate material which may have obscured
some of the fibers; therefore, results ma y be low.

Mr. C. S. Stringfellow Chief Mechanical Officer
On August 10 and VI, 1901, our industrial hygienist conducted an air sampling survey at the Waycross Shop. This survey was requested by Mr. 0. G. Wood, Waycross Shop Superintendent, to determine air quality in the Engine Buildup Shop.
The sampling results indicated that the airborne concentrations for asbestos fibers and mineral spirits vapor were within currently acceptable exposure limits. Details of the study may be found in the attached report. No further control measures are recommended at this time.
If you have any questions, please contact my office at ext. 1500 or Mr. M. E. Badders at ext. 1531 in Jacksonville for further information.
