Group I of che Laboratory held a regularly scheduled safety meeting on Thursday, October 11, at Training Room C at 12:45PM. Robert McGreevy presided over the meeting. The following personnel were present:

Robert McGreevy called the meeting to order. A film entitled "Laboratory Hoods" was shown. Everyone was reminded to make sure that hoods are in proper working order. During a Plant B and VC-II evacuation you are to pull the sash down on all hoods and turn them on.
A question was asked as to what type hoods do we have in our Laboratory. We have uuxillory air hoods or balanced hoods.

5. Laboratory Safety Committee - Dr. Hoenes reported that the Lab Safety Committee has come up with a campaign on proper disposal of glassware and syringes. Boxes have been put in the labs which are specifically for dis posal of potentially hazardous items - broken glassware and syringes. These boxes are now stock items in the lab storeroom. Comments in favor of these boxes have been received from employees.
6. Barberton Video Tapes - Dr. Reich has communicated with Roger Crawford in Barberton and received a list of video tapes available for loan. We will try to borrow two tapes on General Chemicals in the near future.
7. VC Film - To meet OSHA requirements, every lab employee viewed the video tape on hazards of vinyl chloride. Next year our annual review of vinyl chloride hazards will be handled internally.
8. Safety Groups Reorganized - Due to the recent reorganization of the lab, the lab safety groups have also been reorganized into four groups.
9. Standard Gas Cylinders - Dr. Hoenes reviewed a memo received from R. Van lloozer on standard gas cylinders. As a result of the memo and discussion in this meeting, the cylinders will be marked to denote who they belong to. Also, the 10 cylinder rack will be used for delivery of standards.
JO. Housekeeping - Another memo was received from a lab employee ox\ general housekeeping in the laboratory. Dr. Hoenes said that it appears the general housekeeping inspections have not been very thorough although the lab has received good ratings from plant-wide inspections. In the future, housekeeping inspect ions will be made on each individual room in the lab and written up as such. The supervisors are to make these inspections for awhile.
Dr. Hoenes called for comments from the group,
1. Hub Cooper cautioned everyone to exercise care in using the hoods. During the last power outage, five hoods tripped and did not reset - three had hood exhaust blowers not working and two had the exhaust fans working but not return air. The hoods are now being checked individually. Hub asked that employees observe the operation of the hoods and to make note of problems.
2. Kim Kaub said that one hood in Bob Kline's lab had zero phase velocity. Bob McGreevy has one with a sash that won't close. Hub Cooper will have the one in McGreevy's lab checked, but Kline's has already been repaired.
Kim Kaub also stated that a humidity and mildew problem has occurred in the sample storage building causing standard and chemical bottles to lose their labels. All have been properly disposed of. The Organic refrigerator in the Quality Control lab had been accumulating unlabelled samples; therefore, old ones have been thrown away and new ones have been properly labelled.
3. Mark Wood stated that Truck 8032 is in very bad shape. He noted that the scat is so bad it is hard to see over the dashboard when driving and the floorboard has holes.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned at 1:35 p.m.

MINUTES OF SAFETY MEETING
GROUP II - LABORATORY
The regularly scheduled safety meeting for Group II was held Thursday, May 5, 1983 at 12:45 P.M. in Training Rooms B and C. The meeting was held in Training Rooms B and C instead of the Laboratory Lunchroom in order to view a video tape on Vinyl Chloride Safety. AH lab employees were asked to attend this session (along with the regular group) or the session to be held May 6, which will take the place of the regular June safety meeting for Group III. A new schedule for the Laboratory safety meetings will be issued for the last half of 1983.
Attached are the names of the people who attended this session.
R. E. McGreevv conducted the session and presented the video film of hazards of Vinyl Chloride, which was narrated by the L. C. Plant Physician, Dr. H. B. Lovejoy.
After the film was reviewed, Mr. McGreevy asked if there were any questions on other Laboratory-related safety hazards. There being none, the meeting adjourned. The time was 1:02 P.M.

MINUTES OF SAFETY MEETING GROUP III - LABORATORY
Group III of the Laboratory held a regularly scheduled, safety meeting on May 9j 1983> in Training Rooms B and C at 12:^5 PM- Bob Van Hoozer presided over the meeting . This meeting took the place of the regularly scheduled meeting for June.
Attached is a copy of attendance.
Bob Van Hoozer opened the meeting by presenting a film entitled "Hazards of Vinyl Chloride". After the film Bob asked if there were any comments. There were no comments, The meeting was adjourned at 1:10 PM.

8. Dr. Hoenes stated that there is still a continuing problem of employees and visitors failing to wear safety glasses in lab areas. He asked for promotional ideas from Group V. Kim Kaub stated that he feels the super visors should make a continual effort to watch for this negligence. Dr. Hoenes explained that he has seen employees with their glasses either in hand or in their pocket but not always wearing them.
Dr. Reich said that in Barberton they placed a box of safety glasses inside every lab door serving as a constant reminder to wear them; also the person assigned to the lab became involved in reminding people.
Earl Gorton stated that employees should have their glasses on when they walk through the door into a lab and keep them on while they are there.
9. Bob Kline explained that the follow-up monitor on the VDCM lab exposure problem showed the problem has been corrected.
Dr. Hoenes called for comments from the group.
1. Bob Kline asked if when the alarm sounds in the lab building do the employees report to the back hall no matter which plant horn is sounded. Dr. Hoenes said they should go to the hall until the evacuation leaders tell them they can resume work.
2. Bob Kline stated that all metal cans have been replaced with plastic ones which are under the hoods when in use. Those not in use are stored in bins.
3. Dr. Reich said that Mark Wood had placed the Organic Research group on the personnel monitoring system. He asked that the area also be monitored when the degreaser units in the rear lab are hooked up; the hall, labs, and next door labs will also need to be checked to make sure the vents are performing satisfactorily.
C. P. LeBlanc stated that if the fumes get out in Room 170 it will be carried by the air conditioning system throughout the Phase II Lab. Dr. Reich stated that the degreaser units will be started one at a time and run for a period of approximately six hours so that they can be monitored more closely and checked for upsets.
C. P. LeBlanc said he does not know how well the vent system will perform until it is tested. Mark Wood replied that the hood stacks may need to be extended to avoid fumes being pulled back down hoods not in operation. Dr. Reich said that previously in Barberton vents came out near inlet vents which pulled fumes back into the lab areas. Bob King noted that a north or northeast wind may pull fumes in the back dock area of the lab.
Dr. Hoenes added that the hood vent stacks be checked for levels emitted.
4. Waylon White commented on an earlier safety problem sampling HC1 in the plant. He said some new fittings have been installed and though there is still rubber hose in the systems, if a blowout occurred, it would be away from the person working there.
