Rose R: Method for Vinyl Chloride Personnel Monitoring The Vinyl Chloride Work Practice Standard. June 13, 1983, recommends an analytical method (NIOSH 176} whicK uses a pump and charcoal tube for monitoring vinyl chloride. It also states that "methods of equal or better accuracy may be substituted". I recommend that we use the Relszner Badge method which we were using prior to the PVC shutdown in 1982. The Relszner Badge method differs from the NIOSH method only In that the air sample Is collected with a passive monitor rather than a punp. Attached Is the Initial work which compared both methods (memo to B. D. Helms 2/12/82) and the note from you stating that the Relszner Badge method was approved by the Central Safety Comnlttee 2/25/82. We have ordered new bottles of standard gas for testing the Reiszner Badges to ensure that they are still accurate. Upon your approval, the Relszner Badge method will be used for air monitoring vinyl chloride when the PVC plant begins operation. GNB:dl 1 Attachment -G^N.
