CraHny TlLUDnrgh RE: mmSTRIAL HYGIENE SURVEY We are listing below comments on the items referred to in your letter of March 21, as receiving less-than-favorable evaluations in our industrial hygiene survey re ports. As you will note, corrective measures are either contemplated or have been taken to improve conditions in all of these areas and steady, deliberate progress is being made in carrying out these plans. Bath Crushing: Design of revisions of this equipment is about complete and this project is almost to the RFA stage. It Includes a revised dump station, conveyors to mill, transfer points, and more hooding on the belts and trans fer points. An evaluation will be made of the entire dust-collecting system and additional capacity installed, if required. Bath Crushing - Bag Filters: The frequent poor rating of this item is due to this being a continuing maintenance and operating problem. Generally, work orders have been requested to correct the situation at the time of the survey. On one occasion we were out of bags for several weeks and on an other occasion the fan got out of balance and the new runner was shipped to the wrong address by the vendor, which delayed the repair about two weeks. In most cases, repairs have been made in just a few days. Conveyor Belt from Mixers: An Engineering Work Order to install a satis factory hood over the open section of the belt conveyor has been issued. This is presently in the design stage. Blacksmith Shoo: A forced draft fan has been installed in the exhaust stack of the hood over the forge. We are also listing below comments on areas, not mentioned in your letter, which frequently receive only a fair or poor rating. Fume from Alcuplate Washer Dipping: We are investigating the use of a ther mostatically controlled pot to prevent overheating of the joint compound and to cut down on the emission of objectionable fume. Potroom Atmosphere: Our worst problem is in Lines 5 and 6 where we do not have adequate draft to tolerate bad covers or fan downtime. This problem should be corrected when the R-398 unit is complete on Line 5. Mold Repair Room Degreaser: Doors are being fabricated to close off most of the opening while the equipment is in use. This should help prevent the escape of fumes into the building. Also, additional heaters have been or dered so that the solvent can be heated with a lower temperature on the heating elements and prevent local overheating. ALCOA sr 4563-RCV.
