On September 9, 1980, the Textile Fibers Department Medical Supervisors met with Corporate Medical to discuss and resolve certain diagnostic procedures regarding x-ray abnormalities and asbestos exposure. During the meeting the question arose -as to what constitutes exposure to asbestos in determining positive asbestos work histories.
In the asbestos standard, the employer is to provide medical surveillance for employees in occupations exposed to airborne concen trations of asbestos fibers. However, ^exposure" or "occupations exposed" are not defined in the standard.
S&F, in conjunction with Legal and the Engineering Departments, have developed guidelines to asslst~~plants xn identification of those
occupation?, which should be included in "occupations exposed". Attached "is-a copy of the S&F guidelines and, ir. addition, a copy of previous correspondence to plant SHE organizations regarding the criteria to use in developing lists of employees with asbestos exposure. Please j communicate these guidelines to your medical sections
Since the SHE organizations are the most knowledgeable about cb assl'T.--erts associated with asbest-rs s-xpesure, medical sections will rely heavily on your group to assist, in idnr.iify^r.g tl'.cs-r er.yl
