Periodic Asbestos Survey Summary A periodic survey of the Friction Products building to determine airborne asbestos exposure levels was conducted on March 6 and 7, 1985. Results of the monitoring Indicated one employee had an exposure level above the 0.5 fiber/cc permissible exposure limit (PEL). In order to lower employee exposure levels to asbestos dust, the writer recommends: 1. Required use of respiratory protection, NPSP 220E or equivalent. 2. Reinstruct employees on proper handling of asbestos containing products to avoid creating asbestos dust. All other sample results indicated that employee exposure levels were below the PEL of 0.5 fiber/cc for asbestos dust. As required under the OSHA asbestos standard 29 CFR 1910.1001(i)(3) and (j)(3), employees must be notified of their sampling results within 5 days of receiving this report. For employees exposed to concentrations of asbestos dust above 0.1 fibers/cc, annual medical examinations including a chest x-ray and pulmonary function test are required. If you have questions pertaining to this report, contact the writer. fiC. /S-v-C hm Attachment A. C. Sattelmeier M. Teodosic 4-110-7171 Discussion The periodic asbestos survey of the Trenton Chemical Friction Products Building indicated one employee is exposed to concentrations of asbestos dust above the.permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 0.5 fibers/cc. The employees' exposure to asbestos dust arises from: 1) Loading the Bipel for the asbestos backplate pad, and/or, 2) Handling or loading of the asbestos backplate pad on the K-Car brake pad presses. In order to reduce the elevated employee exposure level the writer recommends that the plant require the use of respiratory protection (NPSP 220E or equivalent) on this job and reinstruction of employees on proper handling of products containing asbestos to avoid creating dust. The writer feels implementation of these recommendations will bring the plant into compliance with the 0.5 fiber/cc permissible exposure limit. All other monitoring results indicated that employee exposure levels were below the PEL of 0.5 fibers/cc for asbestos dust.
