Based upon these 'records, it is - ci'ear"'tRat Mr. Stumpe- had "a sTgnTf`feint exposure to PCBs during his entire working lifetime. He also had some history of exposure to microwave radiation and to sheet rock which may have contained asbestos. , ....... . In addition, he worked for a brief period of time in a Reynolds metal plant 'f, where aluminum reduction took place. Aluminum production plants characteristically have nigh levels of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons0 present. Mr. Stumpe frequently worked inside various transformers and cleaned out transformer oil sludge by hand. He utilized a solvent, the precise nature of which has not been characterized. In 1982, at age 36, Mr. Stumpe developed carcinoma of the colon. There was a significant family history for carcinoma of the colon in his father and his paternal grandfather. A paternal aunt is also said to have had carcinoma of the colon. In view of the fact that Mr. Stumpe had a history of exposure to chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents, dust which probably contained asbestos, fluids which undoubtedly contained polychlorinated biphenyls, and air which contained polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, it is more probable than not that these-substances-together -.caused ...or=contributed^rto~the^occurrence--of.-----=^--- his carcinoma of the colon. Mr. Stumpe's strong family history of carcinoma of the colon suggests that he was more prone than the average individual to this disease. However, in such an individual exposure to materials with known carcinogenic propensity such as polychlorinated biphenyls, asbestos, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are very much more likely to have caused his disease than any unknown or idiopathic factor, especially at Mr. Stumpe's young age.
