October 1947 Informing you of the death of the above man who had been employed by N.I.Co.Ltd., London Area. I have now received a letter from Lr. Pickup enclosing a letter from'lira. V/ren the widow stating that she does not intend making any claim for compensation and requesting payment of the 50 death benefit. I am enclosing V dopy of this letter to gether v/ith the death certificate which gives the oause of death as cancer of the lung with asbestosis as a contribut ory factor. It appears to have been assumed that V/ren was a member of the Pension Scheme and that Uls widow would accordingly be entitled to a death benefit of 50, but this is not so, as although he had been employed with us for a long period, he had actually been with Held LcParlane and Hobdell V/ay. his employment seems to have been of a casual nature and for some unknown reason he was never admitted to the Pension Scheme, It is possible, however, that the Board would agree to make a payment of 50 on an ex gratia basis but before preparing a report for the Board Meeting I should, be glad of your comments in view of the possibility of an asbestosis claim being made at some future date. , INC: _ Yours faithfully, /* `
