On o r abou t th e f i r s t o f J u ly 1S37 I was c a l l e d to see *"r . who was s u f f e r i n g from a p ro fu s e g a s t r i c
hemorrhage and pain in sh o u ld ers and both arras.
At th a t tim e I tho^ight he had a g a s t r i c u lc e r and tr e a te d him f o r t h i s , b u t h is arms co n tin u ed to become worse and in the course o f a few weeks developed a p a r tia l p a r a ly s is in both arms with severe pain.
About t h i s tim e we o b ta in e d a h i s t o r y o f h is having g a s o lin e in h is d rin k in g w ater and Dr. L in e b e rry o f Norwood C lin ic and m y self
agreed on a d iag n o sis of le ad poisoning.
S ince th e o n s e t, h is r ig h t aria has reco v ered b u t he s t i l l has the ty p ic a l w rist drop p a ra ly sis o f lead poisoning in l e f t forearm , how ever, th e sever p a in f i r s t a s s o c ia te d w ith t h i s has d is a p p e a re d , ., but th e re has been l i t t l e i f any improvement of p a ra ly s is in l e f t arm in th e p a s t two o r th r e e m onths.

Mr. was r e f e r r e d t o me by D r. W. 3 . M a rtin , W a rrio r, Alabama, Septem ber Q, 1937. At t h i s tim e he was concerned ab o u t two c o n d itio n s ; f i r s t , f o r th r e e o r f o u r y e a rs th e re had o c c a s io n a lly been a burning in th e upper abdomen r e lie v e d by ta k in g -s o d a . About August 1, 1937 he had vom ited a la rg e amount o f blood and had passed blood by bow el. Dr. M artin had tr e a te d him f o r u lc e r o f th e stomach and th e stomach co n d itio n had g r e a tly improved. Second, ab o u t two days p r i o r to th e v o m itin g o f th e b lo o d , he had begun to com plain o f p a in s i n b o th arms and f o r two weeks p r i o r to c o n s u ltin g me, th e p ain in th e l e f t arm had been so bad ae to re q u ire la rg e doses o f morphine.
On ex a m in a tio n he was found t o have a weakness o f th e l e f t w r i s t , in m ed ical term s known as w r i s t d ro p , w ith some l o s s o f se n s a tio n o f both arm s, b u t more in th e l e f t . A com plete exam ination of th e blood and urine., g a s tric a n a ly sis and x -ra y exam ination o f th e stomach was made by us Septem ber 7 , 1937. A p ro b ab le d ia g n o sis o f c h ro n ic le a d p o iso n in g was made. He r e tu r n e d to see u s a g a in November 2 9 , 1937, a t w hich tim e he was h av in g no p a in in th e arms and th e s tr e n g th was r e tu r n in g to th e r i g h t arm , b u t be s t i l l had a com p lete w r i s t d ro p o f th e l e f t . At t h i s tim e we o b ta in e d a h is to r y o f him having been d rin k in g w e ll w ater co n tam in ated w ith e th y l g a s o lin e f o r about one month p r i o r to th e hem orrhage from the stom ach. The d r in k in g o f t h i s c o n ta m in a te d w ate r was d is c o n tin u e d a f te r he had the hemorrhage from h is stom ach.
