8/6/90 PEPP ADVISORY A sample of talc #32-6822, supplied by Southern Talc Company, was recently analyzed and found to contain tremolite, a type of asbestos. The talc supplier's Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), provided to us in 1986, did not indicate the presence of any asbestos in the talc. After our recent analysis we contacted Southern Talc Company and received their current MSDS which mentions the presence of small amounts of asbestos fibers. (A copy of the MSDS is on file and available for review by any employee.) The talc described above has been removed and replaced with an alternate material. We believe that exposure, if any, to the tremolite has been of brief duration and of low intensity. Based on information from the talc supplier, we do not suspect a health risk from our past use of this material. We are currently attempting to determine the exact duration and extent of our past talc usage. Please direct any questions to the Manager, PEPP Department or the Medical Director.

Attached are the results of analysis of bulk samples submitted for asbestos identification.
Each sample was initially examined under a Nikon SMZ-2T stereoscopic microscope at a magnification of 10X to 60X. Fibrous material was examined for morphology and content.
Portions of each sample were immersed in a fluid with a known refractive index. The sample was examined under polarized light using a Nikon Labophot microscope with a McCrone Dispersion Staining objective under 100X magnification. Optical characteristics of the fibrous material were examined to determine the mineralogy of the fiber. Subject: Talc (Soapstone) Usage
The hose specification group have researched, the usage of talc in the former hose departments in Denver.
They found (1) General Operating Procedures for Mandrel lubrication for wrapped and wire hose of 2/6/70 and (2) Spec 3199-236 (no date). Both documents mention SOAPSTONE and describe usages similar to that formerly in use at Red Bay. SOAPSTONE was not defined by a Gates Approved Material number.
Please commence compiling a list of present and former employees that worked in the wrapped and wire hose departments since 1970.

Health effects may arise from inhalation, ingestion, and/or contact
with the skin and eyes. The toxic effects of talc are dependent or.
the route, dose, and properties of the nuisance particle. Talc
pneumoconiosis is more prevalent among those inhaling talc containing
asbestiforn minerals than among those exposed to talc that dees not "
contain those impurities. The pneumoconiosis varies from an
asymptomatic simple type to disabling conglomerate pneumoconiosis.
Ingestion of talc-treated food has been associated with stomach
turners. Repeated excessive contact with the skin in the absence of
proper hygienic practices may result in skin irritation; skin
granulomas have been reported after liberal use of talc or. tr.e bcav.
Prolonged contact with the eye may causa irritation and/or
"
conjunctivitis.
Asbestiform fibers may be present in this product at amounts less than 0.1% by weight.

disabling pulmonary fibrosis, characterized by fibrotic changes and
miliary nodules in the lungs, a dr*/ cough, shortness of breath, '
emphysema, decreased chest expansion, and increased susceptibility to
tuberculosis. In advanced stages, there is extreme fatigue, extreme

First Aid (Inhalation) Remove me fresh air immediately. If breathing has stopped, give artificial respiration. Keep affected person warn and at rest. Massive accidental powder inhalation has been treated with parenteral corticosteroids and antibiotics, supported with sympathicmatic drugs and oxygen. Get medical attention immediately.
First Aid (Ingestion) If large amounts have been ingested, Stomach, siphon may be applied as well immediately.

First Aid (Eyes) May cause mechanical irritation to eyes. Wash eyes immediately and carefully for 13 to 20 minutes with running water, lifting upper and lower eyelids occasionally. Get medical attention if irritation persists.
First Aid (Skin) Contact during use produces no adverse affects, may dry skin. Generally any mineral should not come in contact with broken skin. To avoid repeated or prolonged contact with this chemical, use good hygienic practices. Wash with soap and a large amount of water.
