C'.C' ABSTRACT An Industrial Hygiene Audit of the Turbin* Component Plant in Winston-Salem, hc was conducted by c. V. Blckerstaff on April 22, 1987. Ma. Theresa Watters provided a tour of the plant and answered question* relative to this audit. The recommendations which follow are a result of this audit, and are commented upon in detail in the Discussion Section of this report. ' 1. Update the plant Inventory of hazardous materials and provide specific training this year to employes who work with hazardous materials. 2. Perform annual monitoring for employes who work with solvents, grinding operations, high noise areas and heat stress operations. 3. Control of ventilation design. Modification should be maintained by plant facilities. 4. Asbestos pip* insulation should be removed by the customer before the units are shipped to the (W) plant for repair. 5. Mr. Sam Brim should be enrolled in the next Corporate Safety Training Course. '2- I r *=3 uS---*J @ I^ii DISCUSSION Tbc purpose of this sudit was to review this plant's operation and recordkeeping procedures with respect to good industrial hygiene practice. The standard (W) Corporate Audit Born, a Hazard Comaunication Audit Perm, a walk-through tour of production areas, and Interviews with plant personnel were employed for this audit. 1. The plant Hazard Communieation/Bigbt-To-Know (HC/RTK) Program was established last year and contains all of the necessary functions, l.e. inventory of hazardous materials, an inventory of MSSS's, a written program, labeling of most hazardous materials and general training for all workers. This year, however, specific training should be given to employes who work with hazardous materials or in hazardous operations such ss vapor degreasing, grinding and high noise areas. MOTE! Corporate Industrial Hygiene has such training programs available. To update and complete your HC/RTX Program the inventory of hazardous material should be updated and copies of appropriate HSDS's should be placed in various areas of the plant accessible to the employes. 2. Industrial hygiene monitoring in the past has Included areas such as air sampling in the grinding operations and noise monitoring. An annual monitoring program should be performed for employes who work with hazardous materials, i.e. vapor degreasing, grinding operations, and high noise areas. Before initiating such as program, review the materials used and the type of operations with Corporate Industrial Hygiene to establish the proper monitoring procedures. 3. Ixhaust ventilation is a'major control for controlling the work atmosphere in the plant. Each ventilation addition or modification should be approved by plant facilities to maximise the control and minimise energy loss.
