I talked to Ozzie today regarding Anderson County, and he says they looked for PCBs on surfaces, using wipe samples on Galbestos roofing, but never analyzed the material itself. They "cleaned" the surface and dispsed of the Galbestos in an asbestos landfill, not a PCB landfill. Since the Galbestos there was installed in the 70s and was grey, it may have been the newer variety made with acrylic, not with asphalt coating, and thus be free of PCBs. Ozzie says there is plenty more there if we want to test it I also talked with the EPA guy today. He was quite reasonable, but he has direct experience with Reynolds in which Galbestos was temporarily stored on the ground and led to a contamination problem (5000 ppm in soils), so he is cautious. He claims the coating comes off easily. Arkansas is investigating further, and I am talking to Jarvis and Joe. Once we have our facts together, we should put out an advisory to the plants.
