I suspect that they did not, but that all documents about the study are subject to being produced in court cases. I know that Dow has already provided theirs. Once these papers are entered into evidence, they are public for anyone. FYI: I have to do a deposition for a benzene case in 2 weeks. Thus far, Wes has been able to keep our Shanghai documents from being surrendered. This is attached. The article claims petrochemicals companies have been suppressing information about benzene and its health impact. It uses several case studies from the past (1980s) and links these to the SHS to claim that the sponsors are trying to prejudice the outcome along the lines suggested in the Houston Chronicle a few months ago. The article has generated an enquiry from a Washington based organisation, the Bureau of National Affairs (BNA) which appears to be a publishing company that covers government activities that impact business. BNA's print and electronic products address the full range of legislative, regulatory, and economic developments affecting business, and are widely respected for comprehensive and objective reporting and analysis. II The API has responded to the BNA about the SHS (their statement below). They do not think that the BNA's output has a huge readership and it is relatively unlikely that other media will pick up on anything they do produce. We have not been contacted by BNA or any other journalists. API Response As you requested, here is our response to the article by Dr. Peter Infante in the recent edition of the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health. The Shanghai Health Study is being conducted to gain a better understanding of the relationship between benzene exposure and potential cancer risk to protect industry workers and customers. The study, begun in 2001, is currently scheduled for completion in 2007-2008. The investigators conducting the study have full control over the study design, research, and all interpretations and conclusions that may be drawn from the data when the study is completed. Upon completion, the findings of the study will be peer-reviewed and published by the researchers in scientific journals. The Shanghai Health Study is a project of Fudan University Medical Center in Shanghai, the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and Applied Health Sciences, an independent research firm in San Francisco. This study is funded by a consortium of petroleum and chemical companies, and the consortium is administered by API. The study was designed by independent epidemiological and toxicological investigators. The research protocols and the research itself are being overseen by scientific and ethics review panels composed of 14 world-renowned, independent experts in the field. The research protocols also have been approved by independent review boards at Fudan University, the University of Colorado and Applied Health Sciences.
