This knocks o ff a l l o f the sc a le and p u lv e rizes i t so th a t p r a c tic a lly a l l o f i t i s pumped o u t by th e s h ip s pumps. Men raj^JLy e n t e r th e h o ld s e x c e p t when th e re i s an e x c e ss o f s c a le t h a t th e pumps have n o t removed o r tw ice a y e a r when th e sh ip i s docked fo r in s p e c tio n and r e p a i r s . T ankers i n co n tin o u s g a s o lin e s e rv ic e a re r a r e l y c le a n e d more th a n tw ic e a y e a r . I n such ta n k e rs th e r e a re in s ta n c e s where a s much a s 25 b b l s . o f sc a le have been removed by hand a f te r use o f th e B u tterw o rth system . U su a lly th e s c a le can be m easured in a few b u c k e tfu ls . Tankers c a rry in g d i f f e r e n t p ro d u c ts a r e c le a n e d a t each change and may be a s o f te n a s once a week.
