asbestos fiber Xeues Jb. Wondratschek Max. Planck Institute for Silicate Research, Wurzburg. In the course of investigations on chrysotile asbestos conducted by this Institute (1), (2), we found different chrysotiles containing impurities in the form of other minerals. The investigated chrysotile of the cross-fibre type in which the fibre axis of the chrysotile tubules is perpendicular or approximately perpendicular to the vein walls contains material from the vein walls at the ends. We determined by powder X-ray methods that these are serpentine minerals, calcjte, dolomite, brucite and magnetite. More important and more unpleasant for industry are foreign minerals which are closely intergrown with chrysotile fibre. According to our X-ray determinations, magnetite, minerals of the serpentine group, calcite and brucite occurred in this way. Intergrowths with magnetite are known and are especially deleterious in the utilization of chrysotile in the electrical industry. The intergrowth with brucite is to be treated in a coming paper on nemalite (fibrous brucite) since it apparently plays a role in the formation of nemalite. While with magnetite no orientation of the magnetite particles was observed and the crystallites are deposited between the chrysotile fibres without favouring any definite direction, the intergrowth of chrysotile with other serpentine minerals and calcite is widespread and regular. The intergrowth laws and attempts at their interpretation are the purpose of this note. MTC 000l9g We round two of the 1 ntergrowth with other member; of the serpentine group. The first is described by 2. Aruja (3) and is made evident by the appearance of vie ale, diffuse layer li.ien parallel to the layer lines of chrysotile. Chrysotile yields layer line diagrams with layer lines per pendicular to the fibre axis even in the case of a stationary crystal. The layer lines generally have sharp borders but the reflections in the layer lines are, in part, diffuse. The inter pretation of this X-ray diffraction pattern was given by Jagodzinski and Kunze (1) with the aid of the tubule structure concept. The lattice constants a // fibre axis = . c^ tubule wall = of ordinary chrysotile O 5.33 A; b_^ fibre axis 7.32 A. according to this are: O and // tubule wall = 9.10 A; These layer lines yield a lattice period, parallel to the o fibre axis, of 9.1 A. Aruja estimated this component to be less than 3% and also expressed the opinion that chrysotile tubules are present in which b is the identity period in the tubule axis. Then, in the case of the interlayer lines, the reflections in the layer line are also diffuse and smeared out. This additional component'can then be bent around b as its axis or it exhibits strong disorder. MTC 000200 -3 - In addition to this,in a chrysotile from South Africa^ (exact locality unknown) relatively strong reflections occurred at the same places in vjhich the diffuse layer lines appeared in the above example. Here, too, the lattice period in the direction of O the fibre axis is 9.1 A. According to the sharpness of the reflections (diffuse tails are resolved into points in several places) we are dealing, in the case of this substance, with an antigoritic material which has its b-axis oriented parallel to the fibre axis of the chrysotile.^' Further regularities couldn't be determined from the X-ray diffraction pattern since the X-ray diagram of chrysotile (stationary crystal) always appears cylindrosymmetrical because of its structure even in the smallest samples and therefore one obtains basically only the information which can be derived from a rotation diagram. The relative amount of the serpentine can be much greater than 3>o and an example is shown in Fig. 1. It,' too, is subject to very strong variations from place to place even at points a few millimetres apart. Orientations of chrysotile with calcite occur relatively frequently in South African occurrences. In a detailed work "Orientation naturelle de la calcite dans un fibre de chrysotile" R. Gay and R. Reynaud described such a paragenesis from a lherzolite without noting the origin of the sample. The calcite, morphologically, forms fine needles parallel to the fibre axis of the chrysotile. 1, An intergroiirth of chrysotile with antigorite according to tne same law was also observed by G. Kunze (personal communication) who recently determined the structure of antigorite (Ip). MTC 000201 H 'I I The evaluation of u fibre X-ray diagram of chrysotile shows that the calcite. forms an oriented inter;growth with the asbestos. The intergrowth laws given are [id-oj , (loo] , [ail] , [in], [laa], [lT3] and |jll] of calcite (rhombohedral indexing) parallel to the fibre axis of the chrysotile. These intergrowth rules are explained by the authors as due to epitac-tic conditions and according to them the influence of the growth of the fibre texture of the asbestos is less likely. The intergrowths are generally considered to be planar and only in one case (with [lloj caicj[te // fi^,re axis) is linear epitaxy suggested, i.e., the intergorwth determined by the structural relationship along a lattice line. Yet the geometrical agreement of the "partner planes" intergrown with each other, as noted by the authors themselves, is quite imperfect. In addition a part of this epitaxy is assumed to be parallel to (010) of chrysotile which is difficult to reconcile with the tubule structure of chrysotile. Our investigation of chrysotile-calcite intergrowth in South African asbestos was conducted independently. Fig. 2 shows X-ray patterns of South African chrysotile samples with 2 (a) - stationary and 2 (b) - rotating crystals. 2 (a) corresponds to the X-ray patterns given by Gay and Reynaud. A comparison of both patterns shows that a rotation of the sample during exposure is necessary to minimize, statistically, the error induced by the fairly coarsely crystalline calcite grains. Only then can orientations, with certainty, be recognized in the rotation diagrms: [lTcU with u = I1.9GA MTC 000202 J ` 2 and 3. [Vl-3 ca with u = B.o3 A and [llij ca '^'^h u. = 6.08 A // jlQ(^V|py^ t The relative strength of the reflections attributable to the individual orientations varies considerably from sample to sample and appreciably in different samples from the same hand specimen. MTC 000203 >o -o- 0Llc| and are also given by Gay and Geynuud; Q.ixj corresponds to [5n] of these authors. One sees this immediately vrhen the two directions are indexed hex.n onally; [ill] [2^ hex, [l^lj "(221] hex> These two directions are obtained by a reflection, across the hexagonal a - b plane. Since the crystal class of calcite does not possess such a symmetry element, the two directions are structurally inequal. This is expressed, for example., in tlpe identity period of both directions: U -j = 8.00 A; U [^Tll] = 2I4..23 A = 3 H jlTlI The other orientations given by Gay and Reynaud were not obtained by us. This last orientation can also be explained most readily; it can oe easily interpreted on the assumption of planar epitaxy. The following planes could be considered as partners O in the problem: (001 )(jhrys. a rectangular net a = 533 A; b - 9.10 A, and ("I23)qu with K-a = (hi) = 8.08 AG YCa = [15'] = 26.21^; (x, y) = 90Jj-5f It follows therefore X // a (2x = 3a, deviation 1%) and y.--// b (angular deviation <1, y = 3b with 1$ O deviation), planes of the order of L|_37 A3. One must remember however that with an external diameter of the chrysotile tubule of 350 A the "cell edge" 3b is already bent through about 9 because of the curvature. If epitaxy is also assumed for the other two orientations, MTC 000204 the followin'- possibilities obtain (the ore nartner is always (001) of chrysotile): 1. (lll)ca with [lio) Ga // aGhr and fP-Uca // bChr; difference 4 </ = 7/ > = 5'p 2(a) (111 )na wi th (l^Ga // aChr and jjojjca // bChr; Difference <| = 8> f '3aGhr. ooinpared with 2 Ca r yfo of 5aChr< compared with 3 [ia]ca; z= 9c/o of 2 JlOlJca compared with bQhr. 2(b) (125)Ca with ^ =s.o., // aGlir and felQlca // bChr.J Difference = 3w of 2bchr. compared with^iojca. Other intergrowth rules yield poor relationships. Yet it is debatable whether enitaxy is actually the basis for the occurrence of the orientations. The deviations of the inter- grown lattice cells do not fell outside the common range and are even, in part, very small., vat the area of these cells are in the o order of magnitude of 50^2 in case 1, 150 - 250 A in 2(a) and O 350 - 500 A3 in 2 (b). F'rom this it appears entirely possible that the observed orientations are developed not by expitaxy but by the distinctive habit of the chrysotile or that it played a part in the origin. Such an influence can occur during growth by a kind of "nucleus selection". It is also conceivable that the calcite crystals were originally arranged at random and that later, when solution effects took place, certain orientations were preferentially retained through the protective effects of the chrysotile tubule walls, or could even through continuous growth at the expense of other particles. MTC 000205 I * Ins tuners of on ' ont : o'i ;i.s loo known in wl 1 ch the structure of the substr* to has r.o ef fect whatever. The orientation is then determined by the free surfnee ond boundary energy of the growing phase wi.ich tends to >\ rinh'nr-'. (6). finally there is a % 4 possibility that the CaDCh was nrecipitated as aragonite and that this orientation was carried over into end cite during t'mnsforaa tion (inherited orientat i or)) (6). But there is no evidence for the latter assumption. From the information available, neither a conclusion on the genesis nor on the nature of the intergrowth process can be drawn. The exact petrographic connections ere not known since only individual fragments of chrvsotilu were available and the locality is not known. The general conditions o'' the formation of the chrysotile make it probable that the has nnociultated from solutions on or between the already formed chrysotile fibres. But the basis for the occurrence of the orientations cannot be derived with certainty. I would like to thunk, heart! ly, i'rof. Dr. ri.
