MACHINING
LESSON TWO-DEMONSTRATION 2
Zeroing the Dial Indicator
Item Description 1 Cutting Head
Item 2
Description Turn This Lateral Runout Screw
14. Turn the lateral runout screw closest to the horizontal position on the side of the hub that is opposite of the cutting head (motor side) so that the needle moves half the distance of the total needle sweep.
If the needle does not move toward the center of the needle sweep as you turn the lateral runout screw, you are turning the wrong lateral runout screw.
Note the number of the lateral runout screw you turned.
Turn on the lathe and observe the movement on the dial indicator.
If the total runout is still greater than 0.08 mm (0.003 in) you may adjust a second lateral runout screw.
The second lateral runout screw you adjust MUST NOT be the screw directly across from the first screw you adjusted.
- For example, if you adjust lateral runout screw #4 you cannot adjust lateral runout screw #2. You may adjust either screw #1 or screw #3, whichever is closest to the horizontal position. If you adjust screw #2 you will counteract your first adjustment.
