East Valpole, Massachusetts Dear Pr# Khudsont . Ve have finally received a report tren Dr. arnost Pullaa, tbeelectron mtcroscopist in Schenectady, covering the first 18 saspics of experimental Kent cigarettes with which we furnished him. It ooours to us that you soy be inter* estad in reoeivii^ a sumsary of Dr. Fullama flndiigs. ' -,.j WT * 1tcrV'i-i'** ^ By way of explaining the attached table, permit us to state that Dr. v Fullaa has worked out a technique whereby he ia able to roughly estimate v;> y quantitatively differencee between different lots of cigarettes with reepeot to "y - the eaount of asbestos partiles coning over In the smoke. In other words, he - smokes several cigarettes selected from each easple and pasees the smoke into a '^y small acetone trap. He then oentrifugea this aoetone in such a manner as to throw out and asperate any suspended solid partiles, from this conglomeration of solid material; he quantitatively removes a small fraction to spread over hie specimen screens. After the screens ere so prepared, he then scans them with his electron microscope, counting the number of meshes in his screening that he '^l'v has to look at before finding a single particle of asbestos. Thus, end since ,.y v. everything up to this point is at least sesd-quantitative, the smoke oontainii f`; the least amount of asbestos requires spanning of the highest number of screen 'y y. meshes, or inversely, tfean he only needs to look at a few poshes to find a v. ' particle of asbestos, it follows that such smoke is the most besvftly contaminated ^ with asbestos partiles. In tbs attachod table ve have arranged the 18 samples covered in bis report in the order of quality, the beat sample being first, end the worst sanple last. The table also includes a trief description of how the '* particular suple in question was prepared. Ve have carefully atudifl^he data in question and must atait that it makes very little scnee. Ws presume that you will agree. Aa a matter of feet, it makes so little sense that we aonewhst question the advisability of sending vV\.y him additional samples which have been accumulated in recent weeks. Ve feed. y.yyy^ I Dr. Harold Knudson 2 Deoeaber 1, 195U this way particularly ainca it Is oar intention to eliminate the use of asbestos in the wry near future. However if It vere not for the money involved. It night be interesting to go ahead and submit the additional sayplaa in quaetioo x in order to acquire a background of information vbldh aoeaday in tha future > might be uaefdl. ooament vfclehyootm y earn io Mk regarding the above'bill be j* t 7# H ' .
