Payrit KH 73691 lF-lOc, 3091 MEMORANDUM FOR RECORD Summary On June 2-3, 1983 an asbestos survey was conducted at AT&T, AAA Hoes Lane, Piscataway, New Jersey. Bulk and air filter samples were collected in 3uildings 1, 2, 3 and A. Asbestos fibers were identified in all the bulk insulation samples. The airborne fiber concentrations were all below the Occupational Safety and Health Admin istration's (OSHA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) for asbestos of 2 fibers per cubic centimeter of air averaged over an 8-hour work period. Introduction Mr. John Downes of 195 Broadway Corporation requested an evaluation of asbestos be made at the AT&T facility in Piscataway, N. J. Ms. Patricia Payne of Bell Laboratories performed the survey on June 2-3 1983, accompanied by Mr. Larry Doyle and Mr. Bill Murphy, both of 195 Broadway Corporation. Methods A walk-through survey was first done to select sampling locations. MSA (Model G) personal sampling pumps with a MCE ( 0.8ym, 37 mm) filters in line were calibrated before and after use. Representative area air filter samples were collected in Buildings 1 through A. Bulk insulation samples were collected where possible in the same area of the air filter samples. All samples were analyzed by Clayton Environmental Consultants, Inc. of Edison, N. J. CONFIDENTIAL ? Analysis of the air filter samples for fibers greater than five microns in length with an aspect ratio of three tc one or more were done in accordance with National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health P&CAM 239- The bulk insulation samples were analyzed by polarized light microscopy to identify fibers with the morphological and optical characteristics of asbestos fibers. Results The area fiber concentrations for the locations monitored are reported in Table One. All of these sample concen trations are below CSHA's PEL for asbestos, as well as the medical surveillance requirement set at 0.1 fibers/cc for an 8-hour time-weighted average. All the bulk insulation samples contained asbestos fibers as reported in Table Two. The Treasury Computer Room (2D-100) did not have any sprayed-on insulation above the ceiling tiles. Therefore, no asbestos insulation material could be found in this location. Discussion Based on the results of this asbestos survey, the ambient fiber levels measured are well below the OSHA's PEL for asbestos and do not present a potential health hazard.
