He said that they are currently running a plant trial for a customer evaluation and there has been some concern by their plant health authorities as to the safety of utilizing the RG-244 in.the plant. I sent him some time ago some of our literature and the toxicology report on our asbestos products. He said that their plant people were not satisfied with this literature. I suggested that he or the people in question call Mr. Paul McDaniel of our Health Department in New York. Jeff thought this was a fine idea and said that someone would be contacting Mr. McDaniel in the near future. I have since left word with Mr. McDaniel. Jeff said that their laboratory evaluation of the RG-244 went very well and he is encouraged by their work to date. Polyester Applicati ons (Telecon) OBJECTIVE Follow up on status of RG-244 program at subject company. OBSERVATIONS r**/vsd -- APR 29 197/ "SfWSP* Mr. Selley informed me that they are currently running a pilot trial with the RG-244. The asbestos has been approved for a new fire retardant polyester laminant application. However, there have been objections by their plant management concerning the use of asbestos due to the question of toxicology. According to Jeff the contract for this formulation was turned down by the plant and the trial had to.be run in the pilot plant instead at Tonawanda. He did say that the asbestos was not the only issue concerned and that the plant people have been trying for some time to get new air ventilation systems and they may be using the asbestos as an added political football to get their way. The system in question would cost roughly one half a million dollars according to Jeff. Presently, the formulation for this new product and its manufacture has been in negotiation with plant personnel and they are suppose to report back their opinion and recommendations within the next 2 weeks. Paul McDaniel of our health office will be contacted by Hooker personnel concerning his recommendations for in-plant use of the RG-244. Mr. Selley said that they anticipate a production of approximately 10 million pounds of this product for this year utilizing 1/2% of RG-244. This would realize a potential market of 50,000 lb. of RG-244 this year. Mr. Selley asked that I get in contact with him again the latter part of next week and that he would have better insite as to the situation at that time. I also called New York to learn both Dr.Dernehl and Mr. McDaniel were out for the remainder of the week. I spoke with Dr. Wain in their stead informing him of the situation at Hooker Chemical and the Dossibility of their calling our health department some time this week. He agreed to offer any assistance in answering their questions should they call and to report jack to us here. RECOMMENDED ACTION pLI - Follow up with Jeff Selley Wednesday or Thursday of next week. OBJECTIVE Discuss the results of their lab work with SC--200, 200X, and 210. OBSERVATIONS Only SG-210 studied to date as they feel that pellets can not be handled with their present production equipment. Pellets are of some interest, but they are in compliance with Federal regulations and so dust is not a problem at this time. However, the other obvious advantages of using pellets were discussed in detail and they may become a serious consideration in the future. They were impressed with the physical test results that they obtained with SG-210 versus Hedman fiber as a control. Substituted SG-210 on a pound for pound basis. Big objection is the increase in cost of the resulting compounds. Recommended they lower the replacement ratio which they will do in their next work. Their present work did show that better physicals could be obtained at a higher cost versus their normal formulation. In fact, John concluded that the Electricals were as good or somewhat better than the controls, but not outstanding. Results were more like those which they would get witn glass as the reihforccr\- Suggested they evaluate HPO for applications where these properties are critical. No abrasion tests run at this time. Will include in their next test program. ACTION Send bag samples of SG-130, 210, and HPO to John or Frank. Send calculated delivered prices of SG-130, 200, 200X, 210, HPO and HPP to John with suggested substitution levels in order to get similar physical strength properties. Report of Call Hooker Chemical Co. -2- Sept. 9 , 197L MISCELLANEOUS The fact that UCC never switched to "Calidria" seems to disturb thes people to some extent. Also the fact that GE is no longer using asbestos ar.d that their latest non-asbestos compounds have shown an improvement over those first offered is given them some concern. Tried to get an asbestos eor.sunotic figure from Frank but he was unable to give any information on this. Will pursue with John at next meeting. typed 9/17M mlv for 7. P. Norris W. C. Thurber J. E. Durez Division North Tonawanda, NY 14120 Interviewed Jeff Selley: Manager - Polyester and Urethane John Ondesko: Group Leader - Molding Materials Frank Brvzinskv: Engineer - Molding Materials OBJECTIVES 1. Discuss RG-244 toxicology and OSHA Regulations. 2. Discuss Calidria test results in phenolic molding compounds. OBSERVATIONS 1. Very encouraging visit with Jeff Selley. Discussion was primarily on present and possible future asbestos regulations which was covered by Bob. Jeff is concerned mostly about the reaction of his plant people on this subject, and apparently wanted reassurance that his operation was not going to face any undue problems because of using RG-244. Appeared to be very satisfied with Bob's discourse and requested a letter from Bob summarizing our talk. About 50% of Hooker's P E thix resins now contain RG-244, and Jeff stated he would like to switch to 100% 244 in the future if he could convince his plant people that this was the way to go. Likes 244 because of economics, performance, and good wetting properties. Assured him that we could supply his needs because of the plant expansion and that we would welcome his additional business. Only dark spot on the horizon at this point is the present lack of demand for their polyester resins. Jeff feels this situation will probably exist until at least the 3rd quarter of 1975. 2. Discussion with John and Frank on our products in phenolics indicated that there is virtually no potential for them in their phenolics in the near future. We were not allowed to read Frank's data and obtained only a quick review from John on the results. Some properties such as arc resistance, impact and heat distortion, were somewhat better with Calidria SG-130, SG-210 and HP0 than with their regular Hedman fiber, but in most cases only marginal. The big drawback is cost, as according to them the SG-130 formulation, which also contained considerable low priced carbonate, was about twice as expensive as the Hedman formualtion. They feel that enough work has been done to satisfy them that there is no justification for using any of our products in their regular production. As there is no interest in pellets at the present time they intend to drop the project completely except in very special resins which they might develop which 2- - could bear the additional cost. Requested a copy of Frank's report when completed, but it is doubtful that we will be able to obtain one because of their company's policy concerning this. However, John said he would do whatever he could to clear it with his superior, Andy Daniels, and their purchasing agent, Jim Zimmerman. ACTION Make regular calls on Jeff Selley.
