Bergen St. Louie, Missouri Dr. William Horwltz, of the Pood Division of PDA, Is hot on the trail of a chlorinated "compound X" which is a causitlve factor In chick edema. You will recall In July, I had Indicated that O'Dell at the University of Oklahoma v;aa publishing an article In the Journal of Poultry Science which seemed to Indicate that Aroolor 1242 uoed in paint fox' chicken coops caused chick edena. At that time, wc tranomltted a sample of 1242 to h'orwlts who was unable to find compound X in the sample. Tills seemed to give our Aroclcrs a clean bill of health. Horwltz Is now back on the trail. Because of the use of Aroclore.-as "extenders" for Insecticides against roaches etc. in the poultry field, among others, he feels the Aroclor lir.e should be more fully checked out. He called this week Indicating that the FDA might like to knew all about our Aroclor process of manufacture, cur methods of analysis-- Including chromatographic, our toxicity studies and anything else related to the Aroclcrs. In addition, he Indicated that FDA might desire to send a man to St. Louis to spend some time learning the "Aroclor bualntts". I calmed Horwltz down temporarily by transmitting our latest Aroclor general saleB booklet. I Indicated if he did not get everything he desired from this booklet, to get in touch v;ith n.c and I would proceed from there. When Horwltz has had a chance to look over the bulletin, I will be in touch with him again. What is our experience on the use of Aroclors as extenders In insecticides? I an aware that Eeltsville in '59 indicated 1 to 2;b AroclorB In an Insecticidal formulation such as Lindane for non-crop UBe seemed to be quite effective. Do we have any later data in this ares? I will be in touch when the situation gels here. CJE/mgo C. J. Eby MOMS 096860
