Subject: Research Task Force on Carcinogens In the Workplace Meeting May 23, 1980
*Xn Attendance
The minutes of the last meeting were reviewed and the Asbestos Survey Report was discussed..
It was suggested that for sampling and analysis of ambient air concentration at potential asbestos problem areas, a two way memo should be submitted to Mr. Roger Wabeke of Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology designating the areas to be sampled. IB&T uses the standard OSHA method (e.g., phase contrast microscopy) which counts the total number of fibers/nr. This method, however, does not differentiate asbestos fibers from other fibers. Therefore the Task Force recommends that in areas where there is a possibility of other sources of fibers, the test methods recommended by Mr. A. E. Anderson be employed (see Attachment III, Task Force Meeting, May 16, 1980).
The approximate cost for phase contrast microscopy examination by IH&T for each sample is $19, which is competitive with outside laboratories.
The chromium and benzene surveys were discussed and it was suggested that
both surveys be conducted simultaneously.. Task Force members were concerned
about a number of open issues with r^^ect to chromium: (1) usage of
chromium material - grinding, machining, welding, melting, chrome plating;
(2) quantities of chromium associated with the above usages that would be a
health hazard. Mr. I.. Rosiinski or a representative of IHST will be invited
to the June 12 rooting.
^
It was suggested that sin-c so many/^teriala contain chromium (e.g., various
steels etc.) tear eight be classified according to chromium content:
.Major.5% > .
Minor 0.1% - 1%
Trace <.1%
