The attached guidelines covering the handling of asbestos material are being sent to you, to remind of inform you as to what these guidelines are so that future jobs where asbestos is involved can be done properly. Please review these rules and guidelines with your Chief Operators and Operators given for the handling of this material, and see that they are not deviated from. Your help will be appreciated. Approximately 160 so. ft. is. used. This is applied approximately once a year. This material is stored in Research Storage Room. Rules for- applying-Asbestos Insulation: 1. Material must be cut or sawed in an open air area. 2. If ban saw Is used., It must have an exhaust ventilation and dust collection ^system., which must be turned on while cutting. 3- Comfo II Custom respirator with type "F" filter must be worn at all times. -. . 4. Signs must be posted where they are visible from all sides vihile work is in progress. 5. Area must be cleaned by either vacuuming or wetting down and sweeping. 6. Naste will be put in asbestos-marked plastic bags and sealed. Bags will be sent to the asbestos holding area south of the Main Locker Building. South side of the fence II. Rules for Stripping Asbestos Insulation: 1. .Areas must be roped off with black and yellow tape'. 2. Signs must be posted where they are most visible from all sides. - 3. Area is wetted down with water. (The only exception being that the amount of stripping is of such small quantity that It can be contained in one bag.) 6113 23760 , b. Protective clothing and equipment is worn durnig stripping. a. Protective clothing consists of paper or throw away coveralls. ' b. Protective equipment other than normal equipment consists of dust respiratory (Confo II Custom), goggles, and plastic gloves. c. Rubber boots, if hazardous chemicals are involved. 5- Stripping can now be done. 6. Material is put into asbestos-marked plastic bags (clear bags may be used but they must be marked asbestos) and sealed. 7. Area is cleaned by vacuuming, sweeping and /or trashing down. III. 8. Bags are picked up and put in Dispos-All dumpster or taken to asbestos holding area. Rules for Disposing of Asbestos Material: 1. All throw-away asbestos material will be put in the asbestos-holding area. 2. The asbestos-holding area is an area marked off with black and yellow tape and a Dispos-All dumpster inside. South of the Main Locker Building, on the South side of the fence. Signs are posted. - ("For Asbestos Material Only.") 3-. ' To All Supervisors: Any equipment in your area (such as"pipes, vessels, pumps, etc.)- which is to be brought to the main shop or any closed area that has asbestos material on it must be stripped, completely in the field before, be in a: brought to_ those areas. Equipment brought from the field, with asbestos insulation on it will not be stripped In the main shop or other closed area.
