Wade Pitchford and.Joe Brewer, from the Depart ment of Environmental Management's Land Program office,met with you at your plant. The purpose of the meeting was to determine the status of the plant regarding clo sure of the asbestos landfill. According to the information that you provided during the meeting, the company is closing the plant and shipping outj all saleable asbestos pipe products. Damaged pipe and other process waste from the production of asbestos products will be dis posed of on-site. Prior to burial, the damaged pipe will be crushed at the landfill site then deposited in trenches and covered. During the pipe crushing process;, there is a possibility of air contamination by friable asbestos. Therefore, this office has contact the ADEM Air Quality Pro gram and informed the of your intent) to close the plant and the asbestos landfill. Mr. Brewer, of this office, discussed the matter with Mr. Lud Hoffman of the Air Quality Program. A decision was made) by mutual agreement.that the Air Quality Progr would be the lead agency during closure of the asbestos landfill.
