Wright DATE August 23, 1972 CITY 1 eve land ANSWERING LETTER OF SUBJECT GLID-GUARD ALKYD INDUSTRIAL ENAMEL SPRED GLOSS LEAD FREE COLORS FOR Mr. G. L. Bechtel Mr. D. W. Eugene Mr. J. D. Russell Mr. A. Horsley Mr R. L. Lechner Mr. E. M. Kane Mr. M. F. Gall - Climax < Mr. J. G. Kingston - DPJ/ Miss Joyce Kleinoeder - climax Mr. E. C. Jflbell - Centrlal Mr. W. J. Bennis l Mr. R. llaviland - Central Mr. R. M. Brenner \ Mr. S. T. Bowell - DPJ Mr. W. M Tome - DPJ Mr. W. W. Page Mr. J. Sainsbury Mr. L. Lisco Mr. W. Phillips The following action was approved at thq Product Planning Meeting, August 18, 1972s A. Reformulate the colors listed below to the lead free quality: Yr4510 Safety Orange Y-4540 Safety Yellow Y-4553 Deep Green Y-4554 Medium Green Y-4560 Medium Yellow These changes are to be effective immediately. B. The changes listed below will be made concerning Base Code and Marketing Code identification: Base Code Y-917 Red Pepper Y-4510 Safety Orange Y-4554 Medium Green Marketing Code Y-4520 Safety Red Y-921 Orange Y-965 Shamrock The relabeling as indicated, will be implemented upon completion of the reformulation to non-lead colors. C. The following items in the Spred Gloss line contain the V-2377 Alkyd: Y-937 Y-943 Y-951 V-985 These colors will be reformulated to use the V-2390 Alkyd thus standardizing all colors in the line with the V-2390 Aikyd and a resulting small cost savings. GLn007l5b Messrs Kingston and Haviland are asked to implement sections A and B immediately upon formula availability. Per agreement with Mr. Haviland all of the colors listed Y-917 Y-921 Y-965 Y-4510 Y-4520 Y-4540 Y-4553 Y-4554 Y-4560 will be imprinted in production with the lead free production code "L" and the cartons of Y-921 and Y-965 will be imprinted with "NC" (new color). These identifications will adequately "flag" the colors either for "color change" or "non-lead" so that they will be easily identified and not inter mixed on jobs. The color chips of Y-921 Orange and Y-965 Shamrock will be changed with the next re-run of the Spred Gloss Color Card - estimated January 1973. The Spred Gloss Spray Enamel colors Y-1021 Orange and Y-1065 Shamrock are currently matched to the Spred Gloss Enamels Y-921 and Y-965. This will no longer be true when these colors become relabels of Y-4510 and Y-4554 - the color differences are noticeable. Unless someone has a valid objection, we will noL change the spray enamel colors - the use of spray enamels is entirely separate from the use of regular enamels and the chances for botli to be used at the same time are remote. I can foresee nothing but headaches in trying to segregate two different colors of Orange and Shamrock at the point of sale, if we were to change the spray enamel colors. CWW: e GLD007157
