To ascertain the number of gallons necessary for two coats, multiply the distance in feet around the building by the average height and divide the product by 350, theaverage spreading capacity per gallon two coats. Directions for Application: Du Pont Prepared Paint is furnished in ready-mixed form in the consistency usually required for finishing coat work. Thisis done for the reason that various types of wood and various conditions of the surface require separate and distinct treatments, neces sitating the addition of the proper thinners to completely satisfy the surface. In general, the following directions'should lx* observed: For close-grained, non-absorbent woods, such as yellow pine, maple, cypress, fir---first coat should be reduced with one part of pure raw lin seed oil and two parts of pure spirits of turpentine in the proportion of 1 to pints to the gallon of paint. Second mat should l>e reduced with two parts of raw linseed oil and one part of turpentine in the proportion of one pint to the gallon of paint. Third coat should Ik ? applied as received in the package after thorough stirring. Close-grained woods, medium alisorbcrs, such as white pine, poplar, red wood and cedar, require the addition of equal parts of linseed oil and turpentine in the proportion of 1 to lyi pints to the gallon. Second coat should be reduced with two parts of raw linseed oil and one part of tur pentine in the proportion of one pint to the gallon of paint. Third coat to be applied as received in package after thorough stirring. Open-grained woods, good absorbers, such as hemlock, chestnut, oak, etc., add for the first coat two parts of linseed oil and one part of turpentinein the proportion of 1 to \y{ pints tot he gallon of paint. Allow at least 48 hour !>ctween coats for drying, longer if possible. Drying depends upon atmos pheric conditions. Do not hurry it by adding harmful driers. Sufficien drier is incorporated in du Pont Prepared Paint when manufactured. Make sure that the first coat on new wood surfaces is of the same mate rial as is used for second and finishing coats. Do not, under any circum stances. apply du Pont Prepared Paint over a priming coat of ochre an linseed oil, or any other prrxluct of inferior character which is sometime used for priming purposes. On the value of the priming coat depends th results secured from finishing coat work. For the most satisfactory results employ a reliable painting contracto where the work to be done is of an extensive character. A good painter familiar with surface conditions and the manner in which each coat shou be prepared for successful application. Previously Finished Surfaces: The amount and character of thinne will depend upon the condition of the surface to be painted. It also possesses the advantage of diffusing a greater degree of light without glare. Du-Lite Eggshell contains a slightly less j>crcentage of pigment than Du-Lite Flat and is incorporated with a vehicle that dries with an egg shell finish. Du-Lite Gloss is a full gloss enamel containing slightly less pigment than eggshell finish. The vehicle is a varnish that has been treated to resist the tendency to turn yellow and at the same time dry with a full gloss finish. Du-Lite Eggshell and Du-Litc Gloss may le readily washed and scrubbed and they offer little opportunity for the collection of dust or dirt. They will not chip or break off and arc unaffected by moisture. Umi: Du-Lite finishes are made especially for wall and ceiling use in large interiors, such as industrial plants, institutions, public buildings and offices. Du-Lite is also especially desirable for use in residences as a finish for walls and woodwork where an enamel finish at low cost is desired. May be also used as a finishing coat on the interior of refrigerators and for finishing walls of swimming pools and similar surfaces. Directions for Finishing Swimming Pools: In many cases, the correct finish on work of this kind depends more on the proper application of the paint than on the paint itself. One of the es sentials is plenty of time to permit the different coats to dry properly, and the final coat to dry hard. The surface should be thoroughly cleaned --grease or oil should l>e removed by washing with gasoline or benzine, and dirt by washing with soap and water. The surface must be thoroughly dry before the first coat is applied in order to permit proper penetration of (he paint. i ' The surface should first be washed with the sulphate of zinc solution as referred to on page 3fi. Glossy surfaces must be sandpapered or mossed down with steel wool and carefully dusted. Touch up bafe or scarred spots with a little of the finishing color aiul allow to dry. Then moss down lightly and dust. Do not shake the can. Open and stir contents thoroughly. In finishing with a similar or a darker color, usually one coat sufficient. Allow at least 24 hours for thorough drying, although in emergency, the car may l>e used in from 8 to 12 hours after application. If two coats arc necessary, moss down the first coat when dry and ctust carefully. Apply the second coat, flowing the material on to a smooth, even finish. Do not brush out too much, but apply similar to varnish. When refinishing in a lighter color, or where the surface is in bad con dition, prepare the surface for finishing as directed above. Then apply a coat of the proper ground coat. Cream for use under Brown and Cream, Red forluse with Auto Red, and Gray for all other shades. If two coats are necessary for proper hiding, apply the second coat after the first is thoroughly dry. Complete the finish with one or two coats of Auto Enamel, as directed previously. Directions: New shingles must lie dry. Best results require dipping before laying, followed by a brush cost after they are in place. Stir the Stain thoroughly. These varnishes are specified by leading architects and recommended by discriminating master painters everywhere. The real secret of the economy and satisfaction in du Pont Varnishes is specialization. Years of test and experiment by du Pont Chemical Engineers have developed specific finishes for each specific purpose*. In each are found the elements essentia) to super-service for the particular work at hand. GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR USE New Surface*: The surface to l>e varnished must be dry, clean and free from dust and dirt. If previously stained with du Pont Penetrating o Acid Stains see that a coat of du Pont Stain Sealer is applied and allowed to dry prior to varnishing. This is necessary to prevent the stain from bleeding through subsequent varnish coats. Sandpaper the surface lightly and dust carefully. For best results, the work should be done at a tem perature of about 70 F. Do not permit draughts to blow on the freshly varnished surface. Keep down all dust while varnishing. Apply with soft, flat varnish brush, flowing it on to a smooth, even finish. Allow sulTicient time for drying, sandpaper lightly or rub down with steel woo dust and apply the second coal in the same way. Previously Varnished Surfaces may be revamished by mossing down with steel wool sufficiently to remove a portion of the gloss and dusting carefully. Apply one coat of the varnish selected, flowing it on to smooth, even finish. Certain varnishes may be rubbed, when dry, with pumice stone an water, or pumice stone and oil, to a smooth, piano polish. Only thos should be so treated which so state on the label. Spreading Capacity varies, depending upon the nature of the surfac and the character of the varnish used. An average is 500 to 600 squar feet per gallon one coat. No. 1825 is an all-around varnish of excellent value. Plano Polishing: A high-grade polishing var nish, intended for the finest kind of work. It possesses good body, fine lustre, works easily, is light in color and dries with a dural^e, elastic finish. It maybe rubbed and polished in 4 days, producing a very brilliant finish. Furniture Rubbing and Polishing: Intended for use on high-gradefurniture. It has good body, fine lustre, works easily. It is very pale and this is essential where it is to be used wdth delicate colors. Supreme Japan: In drying Strength this sur passes anything in the marker and is unequaled as it mixes with colors and cheap oil without "livcring up." It is a sti|K*rior article in every res|cct. , Caution: In mixing with most of the colors one gill of Supreme Japan to the galk>n of paint is sufficient. Quickly often* up old paint or varnish coats, permitting ready removal. Does not raise the grain of the wood, hut leaves it in excellent condition for refinishing. Uses: For removing old coats of paint, varnish, enamel or shellac. Directions: Shake can thoroughly before using. Flow on with a flat varnish brush. Allow to remain on the surface for a few minutes. When the old coats are sufficiently softened, they may be removed with a putty-knife or a handful of rags. After the pre vious coats have been entirely removed, the surface should be washed with benzine to remove any wax or sediment remaining from the cleaning process. It is absolutely waterproof, unaffected by boiling hot or ice cold water. It is transjwrent, so that it will not leave an unsightly joint. It dries quickly, making a strong, permanent joint. Uaaa: Du Pont Household Cement can be used for mending articles of practically any kind of material: china, glass, wood, leather, porcelain, metal or fabrics. It is adapted for outdoor or indoor use. Directions: On non-porous surfaces, like glass, spread a thin cost on each edge, press together firmly and allow a few hours to harden. On porous articles, such as wood, leather, Earthenware, etc., apply a first coat to both sur faces to be cemented as a sizing. When this has dried, apply a second coat and press together firmly until cement basset. Package#: Supplied in tubes packed one dozen tubes in a carton. 72 A DC I'ONT FINISH KO|< KVI-RV SURFACE <SUP0Nl> DUCO POLISH NO. 7 Description: A special polishing compound designed specific application on automobiles finished with genuine du Pont Duct h is sufficiently abrasive to free the surface from coarseness and tiny irTii-ii larities through friction, whicli is the natural function of any polish. It is so carefully prepared and highly re fined that it protects and even heightens the beautiful lustre of the finish. Uses: For polishing Duco-Jinishcd automobiles only. Directions: The car should t>c washed, if necessary or wiped free of dust with a soft dry cloth. A free appli cation of the polish, using clean, white waste, soft cotton rags, or cheese-cloth, should Ik .- followed by a vigorous rubbing until all stains are removed. Excess polishing material should be rubbed off and the final lustre devel oped by rubbing with clean cheese-cloth until the surface is thoroughly dry. Care should l>c taken when using Duoo Polish No. 7 on less durable paint materials, such as are commonly used for striping. Package*: Furnished in pint and quart cans. c POND PAINTS, VARNISHES AND ENAMEI.S Suggestions for General Painting "DON'TS" Don't paint over a wet surface or during wet weather. Don't paint over a surface that is not perfectly clean and dust-free. Don't pile a number of paint coats, one un top of the other. In time the coats will be so heavy that they 'will break down of their own weight. It is necessary to remove piled-up coats at intervals, so as to prepare the proper foundation for the new finish. Don't apply paint too heavily. Brush out each coat thoroughly. Don't fail to thoroughly stir the paint l>efore application. This means seeing that all lumps or heavy portions are thoroughly mixed with the liquid part of the paint. Don't apply succeeding coats without allowing sufficient time for thor ough drying. It is better to allow too much time than too little. Don't fail to paint surfaces with sufficient frequency to prevent decay and deterioration. It is false economy to attempt to save money by failure to paint when painting should be done. Don't fail to putty all nail holes, and cracks after the priming coat has Iwen applied. The attempt to putty these places before putting on the priming coat will result in the absorption of the linseed oil in the putty by the wood and produce crumbling of the putty him. !>on't use a cheap or an ochre primer where satisfactory results are desired. The life and durability of a paint coat depend greatly upon the nature of the first coat applied direct to the surface. Don't paint over any surface that is not thoroughly dry. Imprisoned moisture in lumber will be drawn out by the heat of the sun and bring the paint coats with it. Don't apply paint on the exterior of a house until the fresh plaster work on the interior is thoroughly dry. otherwise, dampness will be drawn out from the inside by the heat of the sun and probably cause peeling and blistering of the paint coat. Don't reduce a varnish paint or enamel with linseed oil. It will seriously retard drying and trouble may result. Use turpentine only.
