Berg, Mr. W. C. Coleman, President of the Coleman Lamp and Stove Company, last week requested the Derby Oil Company of Wichita, Kansas to supply him with a blend of cracked and straight run fuels containing 3 cc. TEL per gallon for use in testing the new fire unit for Army field ranges. After obtaining your approval I proceeded .to Wichita where I first discussed the matter 'with Mr. Coleman and then prepared 100 gallons of the requested blend at the Derby Oil Company refinery. The burner is now being tested on this fuel and preliminary observa tions indicate somewhat heavier deposits of carbon or gum than pre viously encountered in the Wichita tests on an aviation fuel. We understand that similar results were obtained on the tests at Cin cinnati using a fuel supplied by Standard Oil Company of Ohio. For your information we are attaching a copy of Mr. Cole man* s progress report prepared for the Office of the Quartermaster General in which he outlines improvements made in the unit since last tested by your department. From our standpoint it is apparent that the new replaceable welded filter unit is a great improvement in that it eliminates any possibility of skin contact or contamination of food by the filtered lead compounds. The construction of the new filter disc also eliminates the possibility of fuel vapor by-passing the filter and therefore should improve its efficiency. Mr. Coleman informed me that the unit is first operated with a fuel pressure of 25 pounds per sq. in. which is gradually increased as the filter becomes filled until a pressure of IS pounds is reached at which time the filter disc is discarded and a new disc installed.
