Technical Department Bulletin PILE: E-A-C-31 -2- Remarks Noxide Equipment Enamel was adopted at the September 1963 Managers' Meeting and will be announced at the 1961+. Sales Meetings. It will replace P&L Machinery Enamel, the discontinuance date for which has not been established. BACKGROUND P&L Machinery Enamel was initially named P&L Machinery & Implement Paint. A low cost oil enamel, the latter was primarily Intended for use on farm tools. Later, its role as a factory maintenance paint was recognized, and the word Implement was dropped from the name. The present P&L Machinery Enamel is a practical interior paint, but its outdoor serviceability is limited to only one season. It is not rust-inhibiting and it lacks the service life now expected of an exterior enamel. The colors no longer approxi mate popular farm equipment colors, or widely accepted maintenance colors. COMPOSITION Noxide Equipment Enamel is a totally new product. It Is essentially a good quality alkyd enamel, that has been fortified with a rust- inhibitive component, chemically Identified as basic lead silico chromate. The latter has attained general acceptance as a rust inhibitor among corrosion authorities. Basic led silico chromate is orange and this accounts for the fact that Noxide Equipment Enamel 16 Black is not jet black. All colors have been carefully formulated to accomodate the color of the inhibitor. * PERFORMANCE Noxide Equipment Enamel offers markedly better exterior service ability, better rust resistance and better gloss and color re tention than P&L Machinery Enamel. This superiority is particular ly evident in single coat applications direct to steel. While P&L Machinery Enamel has been recommended for one or two coat work on new exterior metal, protection can be insured only by applying multiple coats. This overcomes the danger of/"holidays" that are bound to develop in one coat brush work. We are recommending multiple coats of Noxide Equipment Enamel on new work. Because Noxide Equipment Enamel is rust-inhlbitive and has good adhesion, it may be used as its own primer on interior work, and on small exterior areas (such as a householder might desire to finish), or to spot prime repaint work. On exterior commercial and architectural work, a primer, like Noxide One Day Primer, or P&L No. 25 Zinc Chromate Primer is desirable and is recommended in our specifications. 0007-PTL-000798 hwt ft tom--USA H26M NUMBER: 2676 Pratt & Lambert-Inc. Technical Department Bulletin FILE: E-A-C-31 -3- Noxide Equipment Enamel behaves like a typical alkyd enamel and produces a smooth glossy film. It is intended primarily for machinery, equipment, and other metal work that requires both a protective and decorative treatment. Noxide Metal Paint, most items of which are also rust=inhibitive, is better adapted for use on structural metal, where decoration is secondary to protection. Noxide Equipment Enamel has many qualities that are similar to those of Effecto Enamel, but the former is specifically formulated for use on metal. Effecto Enamel is a general purpose wood and metal finish, and is not claimed to be rust-IAhibitive. It dries faster than Noxide Equipment Enamel, but the red and yellow colors in Effecto do not hide as well as Noxide Equipment Enamel in the same color families. IDENTIFICATION BY COLOR The American Standards Association and the National Safety Council have been active in promoting color coding of factory equipment and pipe lines to indicate fire and safety hazards. The Noxide Equipment Enamel colors listed above are NOT exact matches for the Safety Colors specified by ASA in American Stand ard Z53.1 (or Federal Standard 595 Safety Colors). The Noxide Equipment Enamel colors are distinctive enough so they are not likely to be confused by color-blind persons (the main concern of ASA). For those who may wish to know exactly how Noxide Equipment Enamel colors deviate from Safety Colors, the following comparison is available: 158 Bright Red 157 International Orange 160 Bright Yellow 156 Bright Green 152 Bright Blue Less yellow than Safety Red. Considerably redder and less yellow than Safety Orange. Close? trace chalkier than Safety Yellow. Richer and appreciably deeper and yellower than Safety Green. Greener and less red than Safety Blue. RADIATION PURPLE Among the Safety Colors specified by ASA is purple (for designating radiation hazards). We have no purple in the Noxide Equipment Enamel line, nor can one be produced by mixing 158 Bright Red and 152 Bright Blue. The closest we can come to Safety Color Purple is with Effecto Enamel 8500 Lilac In the P&L Machine System. The latter. Is recommended in the Specification Manual for Sewage Dis posal, Water Treatment & Engineering Projects. It Is much grayer and less red than the ASA standard. Since purple Is likely to be required in very limited quantities and very infrequently, its ab sence from the ready mixed colors of Noxide Equipment Enamel and Effecto Enamel should create little hardship. While 157 International Orange meets the color requirements of Federal Specification TT-P-59 Paint: Ready-Mixed International Orange, it does not meet the other requirements of the specification. TT-P-59 Paint is frequently specified by purchasers of International Orange. 153 Medium Gray approximates the color adopted by the National Machine Tool Builders' Association as Standard Machine Tool Light Gray (7-B Light Gray).
