PARKER ROCKDALE WORKS MEMORANDUM 1983 February 25 RE: ASBESTOS WASTE DISPOSAL A recent review of asbestos materials used at Rockdale indicates that our efforts of the past few years have resulted in discon tinuing a large number of asbestos-containing items. Potlining reports that there are no pots left in service which have asbestos millboard shims beneath them. Ingot reports that the use of asbestos containing marinite shapes has been discontinued. The only asbestos containing items now being used are those which are well bonded and will not crumble and become airborne. Asbestos-containing insulation is still in service on some steam lines and vessels and these have been identified by Maintenance so that proper precautions can be taken when the insulation is removed from service. Also, there may be some old wiring in service which has asbestos insulation. This, too, must be handled in accordance with rules for asbestos disposal. Since all of the asbestos materials in service or still being used (valve packing, garlock gasketing, etc.) is handled by Maintenance, it is appropriate that the special load lugger for accumulating asbestos waste be relocated to the Maintenance area. Also, those departments which have their own containers for accumulating asbestos waste can discontinue their use and remove any labels identifying them for asbestos use. Would each of you review your department's asbestos situation and let me know by 1983 March 01 if anything has been overlooked. Assuming this assessment is correct, I will ask Joe Ochoa to empty the asbestos bucket located next to Room 4 and relocate it as directed by Bill Eckert. Any departments who have asbestos waste containers (Ingot Plant, etc.) but no longer generate asbestos waste, should empty those containers into the big bucket before Joe jiay,ls it off.
