Chief, Industrial Health Group Subject: Gouverneur Talc Fiber Samples Enclosed Is a listing of 25 samples collected at the Gouverneur Talc Company, Balmat, NY. The samples, submitted by personnel in the Albany Subdistrict Office, Northeast District, MESA, were evaluated for fiber concentration using the method described in the NIOSH criteria document. ' * ^ * The filters submitted are not representative of the fiber concen trations found but were selected to include different occupational exposures and concentrations of one fiber/ral or greater as deter mined by the technique mentioned above. A wedge was removed from the filter when it was received to prepare a microscopic slide for count evaluation. We have split the remaining portion of the filter sending one-half to you and retaining the remaining portion. To protect the face of the filter, it has been shipped in a petrie disc (dust side up) with a small piece of tape securing the filter to'the base of the disc with the tape covering only the clean edge of the filter. If you have any questions concerning these filters, please contact me,(phone 234-4824). Glen W. Sutton Enclosure CCS A. 2. Dimitroff A. Goodwin Subdistrict Manager Albany, NY (y/end) ` it 19 \-. OHIO *5202 Room 532 E.J. Podgorski, Subdistrict Manager MESA, Metal and Mon-metal Mine Health and Safety Room 309, Federal Building Albany, New iork 12201 Dear Mr. Podorski: , The fifteen airborne dust samples collected by MESA at the Gouverneur Talc Company, No. 3 Mine and Mill which were submitted by Glen Sutton on November 11, 1975 have been analyzed for asbestos fibers by our labora tory. Asbestos fibers (3 to 1 aspect ratio) greater than 5 pm in length were counted using a Zeltz phase contrast microscope at 400X magnification. . The counting field area for this microscope is 0,0074 mm2. The results of our analyses are attached and compared with concentrations determined by MESA's Denver Technical Support Center. In general, our counts are 2 to 10 times the MESA values. We have verified our counts by having 3 different counters count several of these samples. In all cases, results were within + 15%. The reasons for the large disparity in lab results is unclear; however, before your report is submitted to the company, 1 would suggest another counting comparison and discussion of techniques. I am sending Glen Sutton 15 of our samples collected at the Gouverneur Talc Company, No. 1 Mine and Mill for theIk comparison counts. o Should you have any questions, please call me at (513) 684-3255.
