STANDARD MEMORANDUM IDENTIFYING CRITICAL SURFACES ON CASTINGS .0001 Certain surfaces on casting cannot tolerate imperfections on them after they are finished machined and therefore require more stock allowance than normal on their pattern. These surfaces are designated as "CRITICAL". They are of the nature of sliding or bearing surfaces, cams, worm wheels, surfaces that will carry graduations, any surface that requires a fine finish, etc. As of this date, all new casting drawings should note these surfaces by adding a "C" to the normal finish mark.* This marking will help all further handlers of the part during its processing recognize the need for extra stock. If it is found that this identification is essential on an existing drawing, it should be added by a change request. STANDARD DEPARTMENT G.A.
