Prior to the Issuance of these proposed amendments, there was k m question ea to diathar an artist would be permitted to use white lead in the preparation of his canvas. Similarly, there wes question aa to whether appliances such as refriger ators, stovss and washers could be primed with lead bearing anti-corrosive paints. These questions have now been clerlfied by the proposed amendments, and assuming they become e pert of the Act, these legitimate uses for lead will be allowed to continue. At the recent federation of Societies for faint Technology Meeting in Atlantic City, L2A attended a session at which Mr. Malcolm W. Jensen of the POA was slated to discuss OSH* regulations. Instead Mr. Jansen spelts about the above 'mentioned pro posed amendments, as well aa making these following pointst (1) Rls (Jensen's) Bureau was on that day--October 39, 1972, taken out of the. food and Drug Administration and cade the primary agency to carry out the nest "Consumer Product Safety Act," signed into law by the President oa that day. (2) As the head of that agency, Mr. Jansen said that his new group. The Preduet Safety Commission, would have jurisdiction over whether or not a further reduction of lead in interior paints to 0.06s would be necessary. <J) Ha said this reduction, "...would not be effected until or unless measure ment techniques improved to the point where such levels of lead could be reproducitoly and accurately measured--end at the asm# time, the agency must be convinced that 0.06% lead paint* will produce lead poisoning in the future--and at this time therm la no such evidence.* Sincerely, jrSilm Attachment Jerome f.
