Combined ASTM Specs C312 and C52p fplearance and Nesting), a. Two approaches to accomplish the above were submitted. One written by J, Barnhart, 6/ 1 / 64, and the other by W, Turner, The essential difference between the two, was the incorporation of tolerances on the gap distance between pipe O, D, and insula tion ED. in W, Turner's paper as well as the inclusion of recommended pipe and tubing insulation thicknesses. The committee agreed to adopt J, Barnhart's proposal letter, dated 6/1/64, of combining C312 and C521 (incl, tubing), with the following changes noted below: (W, Turner's letter was excluded baaed upon the addition of tolerances), 1, Remove "usually supplied as cylindrical half sections" in the first paragraph, 2, Remove "for use on heated lines" and substitute "for use at temperatures not over 1200F." The first paragraph would then read as follows: This recommended practice is intended as a guide in the manufacture of preformed rigid pipe and tubing insulation for use at temperatures not over 1200F. Its purpose is: (a) To insure satisfactory fit on standard pipe and tubing, (b) to accomodate radial expansion of pipes and tubes which are heated after application of the insulation, (c) to minimize the number of sizes and thicknesses to be manufactured and stocked, NOTE: The question as to the need for the word "manufactured" in the first sentence was held over for discussion in the T St R meeting on September 18, 1964, C DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY O Bureau of Ships P Washington, D. Concerning the sampling procedures in the specification, it has been recognized that the change from segments to pounds has resulted in a requirement for an unreasonable amount of testing* Therefore, this Bureau has taken action to modify the specification, as recom mended. The Bureau of Ships appreciates the receipt of the additional recom mendation concerning the specifications. D, of insulation is shown to be 6* 193, which results in a gap of 0.068 inches rather than 0.078 inches. The I. D, was, therefore, changed to 6, 203 inches. In addition, J. Barnhart is requested to review all other dimensions and determine that they are accurate. c. The tabular format and titles used in W, Turner's letter of Feb. 19, 1964, along with the use of the term NFS (nominal pipe size), were adopted by the committee. 2. Bu-Ships Technical Manual -- Chapter 39 Thermal Insulation a. The committee agreed to shelve any discussion on changes that were proposed. V/, Sinclair indicated that Bu Ships will not consider NIMA's recommended changes as noted in J. Barnhart's letter of 8/17/64, because they were received too late. Bu Ships will consider NIMA's recommendations on the next reprinting of Chapter 39. b. Chapter 39 is expected to be published and available on or about Oct 15, 1964. J. Barnhart is requested to mail copies to all members of this committee. 3. Size of Samples for Soaking Heat Test a. H, Hoopes suggested in his letter of 7/21/64 that this committee recommend ASTM C-356 sampe size be changed from 6" x 2-1/2" x 1-1/2" to a 36 square inch sample as called for in HH-I-523a. It was brought out that most companies use a 6" x 2-1/2" x 1-1/2" sample size or a size very close to that except for Fibreboard which uses a 4" x 9" x 1-1/2" sample. Also brought out in discussion was the fact that Amendment No. 2o f HH-I-523a eliminates the 36 square inch requirement and refers to C-356. As a result of this, H* Hoopes withdrew his request for a change to the 4" x9M xl-l/2" sample size* 4. Other Business a. Table 21 of the ASHRAE Guide was discussed. Agreement was reached by the committee to suggest the addition of OCF'F/G High Temperature Block Insulation to the table under the form. Blocks, Boards and Pipe Insulation. A.
