This investigation was prompted by tha conviction of the writer that research along tha lines of improved darability alone h&a rseohed tha point of diminishing returns and that a sow approach Bight load to a sore rapid advance in sine yellow primer technology. Tha plan of research was to formulate a primer possessing tha optimum in the qualities listed above, and then to alter those properties somewhat if durability- requirements made it necessary.

Drying tine is slightly batter than red lead, fta* it possesses a pleasing Ugfct green oolor. la general, this primer eanpares wary well with red lead in applieatlea properties.
DISCUSSION*
^ Research in struetural primers has Imtsfim concentrated itself
in improvements in durability. Changes in formulation dletsted by improved durability often altered the application properties (brushing and leveling eto.) so such that a eoaproniae is durability was necessary la order to obtain a praetloal paint product.
The optimum primer so far, and tha one vhloh we are currently prosating In the structural field, la P-224-BR or F-244-T. P-224-SR is 1-337/ brown Iron oxide/tale-40/30/30 in alkyd/raw L.0.-50/5O, while P-244-* is the Sana as P-224-8R, but with ferrite yellow replacing the brown iron oxide.
Our aost serious competition In the structural primer field is red lead. Bad lead struotural prhears are of four types*
a) Red lead in raw linsesd oil.
b) Red lead conservation formula. This contains about 50$ bodied linseed oil in the vehicle end carries about 7$ volatile natter by weight.
e) Bed lead in oil fortified with synthetic reels.
d) Extended red lead in oil or in the conservation oil vehicle.
The orthodox red lead primer is the one usually thought of by the average user. Xt appears, however, that the conservation formula beeaae well established during the war, return* practically the same results, and is here
to stay. Especially is this trua when viewed in the light of continued oil shortages.
The resin fortified red load primrs are not too well accepted by most users because of the decreased watting and adhesion on rusted surfaces. Xt would appear, toe, that the lead industry is not emphasising such primers for structural work. On the other hand, the short lead supply and the lover cost of competitive sine yellow primers has osnssd increased promotion of ex tended red lead primers by that industry.
DUP050150092
In trade contests, the writer ban met surprisingly fan ware who contend that rad load durability la superior to aiao fallow. The subject of
durability baa beau an opea question la asst sails. Invariably, the applleatioa properties of sine fallow prlaars era attacked. Poor watting of rusted steal, low spreading rata, slower drying, power brushing, henee a tandenoy to over* thin on the job, ate, are the points of criticism.
iron the above evidenoe, tbs lapertauea of iaproving our reoomnandad atruotural primer in application properties cannot be ever-emphasised.
It la felt that the candidate, 1124-15-35, has extremely promising oharaotaristios. The aattar Of a distinctive color is felt to bo highly im portant froa a psyohclogiosl and promotional point of view, and color ohipe am attaohod for Inspection. The natter of high solids oontentls also a faotor, which, oouplod with good brushing, should insure against eoeeseive thinning by the painter on the jab. She aasuat of aluainua paste added is only suffioient to give complete hiding at ,0015 dry filn thickness, thus iaeurlng against thin spots in application. This paste is not a separately added component, but eouatitutes m ingredient of the readJNuixed prinar. This aluniaun content produoaa the green color, and was chosen because of the higher probability of
good durability.
Little is known about the ooaparatlve durability of raw and acid re fined linseed oil, Whiting As an extender has received hardly any attention in previous exposure series at Rewaxk, but work at Seaport using this extender la tinted house points hea shown it to have promising durability,
1124-15-36 is a more conservative pigmentation of 1124-15-35, It is X-539-D/Farrite Xellow/Talo-40/30/30 in U.S.I. S-239/Aeid Refined L.0.-50/50,

The teat of the aMllty of a primer to vet rusted steel Is outlined la "The Protection of Structural Steel with Paint", Geo. Biehlaam Paint, Oil ft Chea. Rer. July 11, 1946. This teat Is to allow a small drop of the paint to fall oa a rusted panel, peralt It to dry and observe the width of the dark ring arouad the dried paint spot.
Water sensitivity of & few selected primers (paints 1 to 13 and those containing whiting) was measured by adding 11 by volume of soap solution and following tha consistency trend.
