Dear Richard:
Thanks for spending the time recently with the Benzene Health Research Consortium (BHRC) Technical Committee. You and Dr. Krieger explained the current situation with the Shanghai Benzene Research program in a clear manner, particularly with regard to exposure assessment, and provided a much clearer idea of your planned path forward.
It would be useful to incorporate and document your thoughts as to these next steps in implementing the revised exposure assessment plan in your next progress report. While we recognize there are still some uncertainties in this plan, we would appreciate sufficient details that would allow us to track progress, and also allow this information to be shared through the Progress Report with the BHRC expert panels.
Regarding the program as a whole, the budget discussion was also very informative and we would also ask you to also describe this in detail in the next progress report. Most useful would be a comprehensive budget that would include expected resources needed to complete the studies, including all post-study analyses.

2004 Year-End Progress Report and Revised Expense Projections
Dear Richard:
Thanks for spending the time recently with the Benzene Health Research Consortium (BHRC) Technical Committee. You and Dr. Krieger explained the current situation with the Shanghai Benzene Research program in a clear manner, particularly with regard to exposure assessment, and provided a much clearer idea of your planned path forward.
It would be useful to incorporate your thoughts as to the next steps in implementing the revised exposure assessment plan in your 2004 year-end progress report. While we recognize there are still some uncertainties in this plan, we would appreciate sufficient details that would allow us to track progress, and also allow this information to be shared through the Progress Report with the SHS expert panels.
Regarding the program as a whole, the budget discussion was very informative and we would also ask you to describe this in detail in the upcoming year-end progress report. We would like you to provide detailed information on; item 1) expense increases; and item 2) total expense projections by year using the categories that you currently report in your biannual progress reports (e.g., personnel, operating expenses, subcontracts, travel, equipment & indirect expenses). The "post-study analyses" costs should be included in this more detailed expense projection. We need this information for two reasons; (1) to present detailed rationale for a request for increased funding, and (2) to develop a payment schedule, should we secure funds, to keep the project solvent to accomplish the overall study objectives .Please see the attachment to this letter, to aid you in developing the required information.
