Awards for these achievements are given each year by the Institute at its annual meeting. This year's awards recognize performance during 1988. The Institute's environmental achievement award is designed to measure a plant's ability to control and minimize vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) emissions and is modeled on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants. VCM is a feedstock used to manufacture PVC, the world's second largest selling plastic material. As defined by OSHA, a recordable incidence rate involves on-the-job injuries and illness resulting in medical treatment.
