I. INDUSTRIAL RRODPCTS (South Bound Brook)
A. Felts and Papers
Gasketing
A run of .035", GN-704 asbestos acrylonitrile gasketing was made to fill a trial order from Victor Gasket Co. The product met all specifications and samples have been sent for approval prior to ship ment of the rolls. A full product line requires additional thick nesses ranging from .045" to .062". During this run other weights were made successfully# however, some difficulty was encountered at the highest thickness. It is believed that this can be overcome by formula adjustments which will be tried on any subsequent runs to fill orders for lover caliper sheet.
Saturating Paper
There has been some question about the adequacy of the internal bond strength of certain asbestos base roofing felts. A trial run was made employing a small amount of Accostrength resin in the 10 lb. asbestos saturating paper furnish in order to improve this character istic. The initial results were encouraging and trial quantities of both 3S lb. coated asbestos roll roofing and 15 lb. asphalt saturated felt have been run using the test felt. Product is being evaluated to determine if the improved properties are retained.
B. Asbestos Flooring Felt
A longer repeat run using one tank truck of TCD carboxylated latex 400-76E was made and 35 rolls of flooring felt were produced. One minor machine shutdown was experienced but the run was considered quite successful. The material has been shipped to Whitehall for evaluation and if the felt is acceptable, future production will involve a greater percentage of this new binder until complete con version is accomplished.
C. Automotive
A program for production of molded, automotive sound deadening membrane has progressed satisfactorily and Marketing is receiving enthusiastic response from the industry for this approach after viewing RfcD prepared samples. Vacuum-forming molds for Fisher body sail areas are being procured. Arrangements have been made with an outside company to make a five-to-six hour continuous run employing one of their dies in a rotary forming unit. Sufficient moldable-
type membrane has been produced for this trial which will allow for study of time-temperature cycles and improvement of cost estimates.
