Ziegler October 24, 1972 1 6605 / (Pfizer) CORPORATE SAFETY DEPARTMENT 68-72 TOPIC WORKING ALONE New technology and automation result in isolation of more workers. Most of the time, this presents no particular problem, but there are some circumstances where special precautions must be taken. For safety considerations, working alone is the performance of any work by an individual who is out of audio or visual range of anyone else for more than a few minutes at a time. Categories where working alone is generally considered permissible include: Custodial job functions except in certain hazardous locations Watchmen or plant protection personnel Office and administrative job functions Any other job function which is part of a written operating procedure of long standing, such that the operation is routine, and that experience indicated is safe If work involves hazardous materials and/or equipment, or if the work is to be conducted in areas where safety hazards exist, working alone, must have supervisory approval. In addition procedures must be established which will include a method of periodically checking the physical state of the person working alone. The periodic checks may be accomplished by personal contacts or by mechanical means. Check Procedures: 1. Personal contacts: phone or radio checks at predetermined intervals to an individual, a supervisor, or security headquarters visit at predetermined intervals by a supervisor, guard, or co-worker 2. Mechanical means: TV monitor open circuit intercom monitor Establishing Requirements: Whenever there is a doubt or question about the working alone requirements, the appropriate supervisor and safety representative should jointly determine: the extent of the activity the safety limits involved the type and frequency of checks IT BE DONE 1 6606
