In o rd e r to e x p e d ite th e p ro d u c tio n o f ETHYL f l u i d and Q f l u i d a t o u r P la n t j we f in d i t n e c e s s a ry to make a s l i g h t change i n th e m ix, w hich r e s u lts in a s lig h t change in th e p ro p o rtio n by w eight o f te tr a e th y l le a d to f l u i d . The in g r e d ie n ts i n our p ro d u c t w i l l rem ain c o n s ta n t, h u t i n th e p a s t we have b een a d d in g c e r t a i n s m a ll v a ry in g q u a n t i t i e s o f k e ro sen e i n o rd e r to com pensate f o r th e im p u r itie s (1% to 2%) t h a t occur in th e p ro c e ss o f m anufacture o f t e t r a e t h y l le a d . We now f in d t h a t we c an u se a s u b s t a n t i a l l y le ss q u an tity of th is kerosene f i l l e r and give an increased q u a n tity of te tr a e th y l le a d co n ten t and s t i l l co n tin u e to fu rn is h a uniform mix of th e in g re d i e n ts composing b o th ETHYL and Q f l u i d s .
There w i l l be some b e n e f i t to our custom ers by re a so n o f s l i g h t l y decreased tr a n s p o r ta tio n c o sts on th e f l u i d s .
To e x p la in f u r t h e r , o u r p r e s e n t drum mix h as a le a d c o n te n t o f 125,000 c u b ic c e n tim e te rs o f le a d . By u s in g th e minimum k e ro sen e r e q u ire d a s a f i l l e r to make up th e v a ria n c e s t h a t o ccu r i n t e t r a e t h y l le a d p u r i t y , we can in c re a s e th e t e t r a e t h y l le a d c o n te n t to 130,000 cu b ic c e n tim e te rs . The p re s e n t w eight o f f l u i d i n our drums i s 73? pounds and th e new w eig ht w i l l be 747 pounds.
In th e c a se o f drum sh ip m e n ts, w here b le n d in g o f ETHYL and Q f l u i d w ith g a s o lin e i s conducted on th e b a s is o f a g iv en number of drums u se d i n each blend, the change is very sim ple, re q u irin g only the s u b stitu tio n of the new drum m ixing c h a r ts f o r c o n ta in e r s w ith a le a d c o n te n t o f 130,000 c u b ic c e n tim e te r s , f o r th e c h a r ts t h a t a re now in u s e . The new mix w i l l be c l e a r l y in d ic a te d on each drum, and a l l th a t i s n e c e ssa ry is fo r you to in s tr u c t your H b le n d in g o p e ra to rs t o be su re to a s c e r t a i n th e le a d c o n te n t o f each drum as i t is blended and to apply th e pro p er m ixing c h a rt in making th e ir c a lc u la tio n s . I t w ill probably be a m atter of but a short tim e before your present stock of 125,000 cubic c e n tim e te rs o f le a d c o n te n t drums a r e ex h au sted , and th e p re s e n t c h a r t can th e n be d is c a rd e d and th e c h a r t f o r th e new mix w ith a le a d c o n te n t o f 130,000 C ubic;cen tim eters used e n tire ly th e r e a f te r .
However, th e requirem ents in o rd er to e f f e c t th e change a t bulk m ixing p o in ts a re a l i t t l e more com p licated fo r th e reaso n th a t each r e fin e ry w ill have some re s id u e o f th e p re s e n t mix in th e b u lk s to ra g e ta n k , when th e f i r s t ta n k c a r o f th e new mix i s d e liv e r e d . For t h a t re a s o n , eaeh r e f i n e r y a t w hich b u lk mix in g ta k a s p la c e w i l l have t o work o u t a c a l c u l a t i o n b ased on th e p e rc e n ta g e Of o ld mix to new mix t h a t i s c o n ta in e d in th e b u lk s to ra g e ta n k .

W ith th e s m a ll p e rc e n ta g e o f d if f e r e n c e betw een th e two m ixes o f f l u i d , a fte r th e form ula has been applied to the blending th a t takes place a fte r the r e c e i p t of th e f i r s t ta n k c a r o f th e new m ix, i t w i l l be u n n e c e s sa ry to a p p ly th is averaging procedure to mixes accom plished a f te r th e second tank car of th e new m ix i s d is c h a rg e d in to th e b u lk s to ra g e ta n k , and a t t h a t tim e and
t h e r e a f t e r th e c h a r t c o v e rin g th e new mix c an be u s e d .
I t is recommended, however, th a t our custom ers use every endeavor to c\j dim inish th e ir in v e n to rie s of f lu id in th e ir bulk sto rag e tanks before e ith e r
th e f i r s t ta n k c a r o f th e new mix o r th e second ta n k c a r o f th e new mix i s lo a d ed in to them . I f i t i s p o s s ib le to g e t down to 10,000 pounds in th e c ase where r e f in e r ie s order in 3,000 g a llo n tank car lo ts , or 20,000 pounds where 6,000 g a llo n tanks c a rs a re ta k en , i t would mean th a t w ith th e u n lo ad in g of the f i r s t tank c ar re c eiv e d , a m ixture o f approxim ately 20$ of old mix f lu i d and 80$ o f new mix f l u i d w ould r e s u l t and i f in v e n to r ie s c o u ld be worked down b e fo re th e re c eip t of the second tank car, the per cent of old flu id in the bulk storage tank a f t e r th e unloading of th e second c a r would re p re se n t 20$ o f 20$, or 4$ o f th e th e n c o n te n t of th e ta n k . By a p p ly in g th e new m ixing c h a r t f o r f u r t h e r b le n d in g , th e p h y sic a l amount of le a d d e fic ie n c y as compared w ith th e c h a rt fig u re s would be b u t ,1$, which is c e r ta in ly w ell w ith in th e lim its of a c c u ra c y t h a t o ccu r in th e b le n d in g o f ETHYL and Q, f l u i d s w ith g a s o lin e .

A lso, our P la n t Manager w ill w rite each of our custom ers when th e f i r s t shipm ent o f t h e hew mix g o es fo rw a rd and t h i s in fo rm a tio n w i l l be communicated t o th e D iv is io n Managers o f our S a le s D epartm ent who w ill pass i t along to our f ie ld re p re s e n ta tiv e s . Both th e D ivision Managers and th e f i e l d men w i l l be a v a il a b le to h e lp anyone i n your o rg a n iz a tio n in w orking out th e fo rm u la and o th e rw is e a s s i s t you u n i i l such tim e a s th e new mix h as come in to u n iv e r s a l u se and i s fu lly u n d e rs io o d by everyone c o n ce rn e d .
