The International Smelting & P.e-
fining Co., a subsidiary of the Ana
conda Copper Mining Co., will close
down its East Chicago plant per
manently by Aug. 1.
Approximately 350 employes will
be deprived of jobs because of the
closing.
An East Chicago plant official
'yesterday verified an announce
ment from the New. York head
> quarters, but declined to give a
reason tor.it. In New York, the company said
(the plant was closing "because we
are abandoning that type of manu
facturing.1'
The plant makes zinc oxide and
white- lead.
. The local official said "the treat merit of materials on hand will rc-| quire several weeks and the plant, will possibly be in operation be yond the first of August."
There was no comment on the; possibility that some of the East Chicago employes may be trnns-j
ferret! to another Anaconda sub-f sidiary.

Pigment Plant to Close
In E. Chicago by Aug. 1
The. East Chicago, Ind.. plant
of the International Smelting &
Refining Co. will close by Aug. 1,
it was announced yesterday.
The plant, which makes zinc
oxide and white lead and em
ploys 400, will close because it
is going out of that type of man
ufacturing, not necessarily due to
the lack of materials, as reported
earlier in the day, officials said
last night. The company is
a subsidiary of Anaconda Copper
Mining Co.
