With reference to projection of future mortality caused by asbestos diseases I am finding it rather difficult to predict in advance of actually undertaking the work what a reasonable charge for it would be. As you probably appreciate we do not often undertake work in this way and therefore have no experience with estimating what a reason able fee would be. I am anxious on the one hand to provide you with a reasonable "deal" and on the other to obtain fair financial remuneration for the work involved. I wonder whether you would agree to leaving the cost somewhat indefinite at this stage? What I would propose would be to undertake the work charging the actual cost of computer time, junior staff time, etc. together with a fee of about $50 per hour for the time which I myself must spend on the project. I do not expect that this would add up to an excessive amount but you might like to place some sort of ceiling on the expenditure. I would then advise you as we progressed if it looked as if that ceiling might be exceeded. I will begin work on the project pending your reply.
