Supervisor's Safety Training---- Gilmore Refer to letter dated March 16, to the Board. 2. Safety Program Ideas-----Gilmore A. Off-The-Job Safety Program B. Supervisor's Safety Meeting (1). Use of Statistics (2). "Hazards of Air" Movie 3. Hourly Safety Committee A. Turnings, especially on internal threading, from the shop lathes creates a cleaning problem, and the use of regulated low pressure air to blow off these turnings is suggested. B. Parking on both sides of the circle, especially during rush hours, constitutes a hazard. It is suggested that parking be limited to one side only. 16919 LAM024189 PMSB AOEND* Page 2 C. Some of the chemicals for the utilities depart ment are received In plastic bottles, while others are In glass containers. It Is suggested that all chemicals, especially hazardous and caustic materials, be shipped In plastic containers. D. In loading styrene on the ship, a loader stands on the styrene tank roof to signal the man at the dock. At times it is necessary for this man to walk out on the tank roof, which Is a hazard. E. The spider piping used for the chlorine dock results In a bind on the pipe when installed. It also creates a straining hazard on the men trying to connect It to the barge. It is suggested that flexible hoses be used, or this work be returned to the fitters so that flanges can be used. F. The venting of chlorine from the barge continues to create discomfort and hazardous situations for adjacent units. It is suggested that a caustic scrubber be installed to handle the venting problem. 0. At No. 4 dock only one loader is assigned to this work. Although he has a phone, if he were involved in an Incident he might not be able to get to the phone, or might have to wait for some one to find him. It could be as long as an hour. H. There is a walkway near 8T11-1,2,3 which has a dead end without a ladder to the ground. It is suggested that such a ladder be installed. 1. Committee feels that the Company does a good job with the lift testing of blocks; but blocks are used to pull at an angle (like an exchanger pull). There Is no way to tell how much strain is required and it Is suggested that strain links be used to limit the load. It is also suggested that the hooks be examined in the routine testing procedure. J. Employees are still using gloves on the emery wheels. It is suggested that a sign be Installed near the wheel, like "Are Gloves a Hazard?" K. 7T8-2 was being cleaned recently and scaffold was used as before, except that the wheels were removed; also, the floor was not cleaned as the job progressed. The Committee questions whether this action was in penalty for their bringing up the item of the use of scaffold on this type of work? SC 16920 LAM024190 PMSB AGE1T Page 3 L. The entrance to the Control Lab Is quite slippery in wet weather. It is suggested that a rubber mat be Installed. These items will be reviewed with supervision by the Safety Director. In addition, the following items are submitted to the Board for their consideration. M. The pipe rack signs throughout the plant are now out of date. The Committee would like to have these made current. N. The Committee was pleased with the First Aid Training now being conducted with the crafts and suggests that it be expanded to other groups (those named were field supervision and car loaders), and that this series of meetings be followed by meetings on what to do in case of emergency In HCN, chlorine, etc. O. The lighting on the road to dock No. 4 is In adequate for those who must ride bicycles to the dock at night. P. In regard to an old item concerning hot condensate samples in glass containers, the Committee feels that instructions have not reached the proper levels, because the hazard still exists. 4.
