Shairaan, " The odnates of the meeting of January 22,1969, were read, and the following items from this January 22nd meeting were reviewed as follows;- ' (a) Progress of Sherbrooke Lab. on Ziess Particle Size Analyser and Image Shearing - the Chairman reported that the program was "off the ground" technically. Photographs were now dear, alignaeat of fibres had been improved and the calibration of the image shear ing resolved* About 110 photographs have bees taken and about 60 counted for length. The fibres being used are those frcm the 2nd P.fi.tf. remni robin* (b) The three reports fron the Shexbrooke Lab. Director concerning the bang-tng of the 10 mesh Q.S.screen compared to noraal testing, and to using a rubber stopper on the screen, were reviewed. The Chairman pointed out that this suggested usage of a stopper was only to help standardise the Sherbrooke Lab. Q.S. tests for the "Random Production Testing". Committee Bombers agreed to review the report for a decision at the naxt U.C.AG.meeting. (c) The Chairman reviewed the first issue (Oct.-Dec./68) of the "Ccarparison Report - Shipping Tests & ft*oduction Random Q.S.Tests" sent out to Q.A.K.A.members on Feb. 11/69. The report was considered satisfactory except that results sometimes are based on very few tests (one shift of production). A yearly aurasary was felt to be desirable in addition to the 3 month reports. (d) Kr.Lindsay pointed out that on January 22nd C.J.H. had only agreed to show "S" aa a su^grade for fibres containing additives not "S", "SS", etc., ae reported in the minutes. The training of Mr. Doyon as a possible replacement for the Fibre Inspector is being continued. 2. Eireefcor meeting in March in Montreal the Conmittee discussed the suggestion that the regular monthly "Shipping Test" report be changed as follows:- (a) that the tonnage shipped by each Company, of each grade be shown on this report. That is, for example, that the tonnage . shipped of 3F, 3K, 3T, 32,etc. would be shown instead of the tonnage of total . Group 3 that is now shown. (b) that 7 Group fibres be treated similarly to (a) above - that is show only the ton nage {and Q.5.test?) of 7&, IT, 7H, 7^,etc., shipped instead of the tonnage of each sub grade as is now reported. Actually there are two (or three) proposals here. It was pointed, out that if this proposal was adopted, and a Coopery had only one sub-grade in a grade group, then the tonnage shipped of this sub-grade was autooatically revealed and perhaps the customer could be pin-pointed. It was also pointed out, however, that this was now true of 7 Group fibres the way the report is made. Conmittee members were requested to be ready to make a decision at the next U.C.& G. The CoBBdttee discussed possible research on classifi cation methods and our approach to Ottawa's as follows: (a) Appendix X of the Jan.22/69 meeting was reviewed (copy attached to these minutes also), ftiis summary was agreed to be cor rect. Mr. Lindsay reported that their Re search Dept, suggested that length-diameter and fjlterability were still major problems. However, the U.C.& 0. Chairman pointed out ' that filterability was an "end-use" problem not basic research and should be avoided in this approach. (b) Chairman reported on the 9CO samples for a "dielectric dissipation" study-which had been sent to Mr. Winer in Ottawa. Chairman is to discuss with Cossette or Wiser the need for ccaparison with a pure fibre con taining no impurities? (c) The Chairman read out Hr.Cossette's remarks (letter of Jan. 28/69) on gas absorption. (<l) "ft was agreed that Hr. Foster and Mr.Dcdds- Hebron should compose a letter to Dr.Convey or Drolet in Ottawa concerning the Asbestos Industry's needs and should send this let ter to Mr.Woodrooffe, Mr. Brady and Mr.Winar for review at a meeting to be arranged in Ottawa. At this meeting Mr. Cossette is to attend also. ' () Ihe Chairman reported on the Technical Com mittee's copy of an Italian article concern ing a proposed method for determining the "value of different types of asbestos". It basically consists of an: "Index Value" Q.S.test weighted by 4 for , 3 for 2 for 10 mesh and 1 for pan. "Specific Volume" - fibre volume after sue* cesaive disintegrator passes. i '-J ,c c f 4.
