Name of the Director who has cleared the briefing: Kristin Schreiber BASIS request ID: GROW/8728 - KJ meets Mr - CEO of Chemours Name of main contact persons: Ref. Ares(2022)8256579 - 29/11/2022 WHO WHEN WHERE WHY Fiche d'entretien , CEO and President of American chemical company Chemours 22 March 2022, 17.30 Physical, BREY Mr would like to discuss with you: Chemours' ambition for Europe; MESSAGE + Chemicals Strategy The Chemicals Strategy will boost innovation for safe and sustainable chemicals and increase protection of human health and the environment against hazardous chemicals. The Strategy fully recognises the fundamental role of chemicals for human well-being and for the green and digital transition of Europe. At the same time, the Strategy sets out concrete actions to make chemicals safe and sustainable by design and to ensure that chemicals can deliver benefits without harming the planet and current and future generations. This includes prohibiting the use of the most harmful chemicals in consumer products such as toys, childcare articles, cosmetics, detergents, food contact materials and textiles, and ensuring that all chemicals are used more safely and sustainably. 1 2 BACKGROUND CHEMOURS The Chemours Company, commonly referred to as Chemours, is an American chemical company that was founded in July 2015 as a spin-off from DuPont. It has its corporate headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, United States. Chemours operates in three segments: Titanium Technologies (titanium dioxide); Fluoroproducts (refrigerants and industrial fluoropolymer resins and derivatives including Freon, Teflon, Viton, Nafion, ECCtreme ECA and Krytox); Chemical Solutions (cyanide, sulfuric acid, aniline, methylamines, and reactive metals). Chemours operates 30 major production facilities located in nine countries and serves approximately 3,300 customers across a wide range of end-markets in approximately 120 countries. 3 Chemicals strategy for sustainability and next steps Further to the October 2020 Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability, several implementing actions are taking place, including for instance the establishment of a high-level roundtable on the strategy and the development of a framework defining the concept of `safe and sustainable by design' and related criteria. Concerning the classification, labelling and packaging regulation revision, we have a very tight deadline to propose new hazard classes and propose simplifications and improvements. The details will be analysed in an impact assessment, and in that respect an open public consultation is ongoing (until mid-November) and the Commission proposal is expected in the second half of 2022. Concerning the REACH revision, the Commission proposal is expected by end of 2022. For DG GROW the biggest tasks are: the reform and simplification of the authorisation and restrictions system; faster and more ambitious restrictions through the generic risk approach for consumer and professional uses and through broader restrictions for all other uses; operationalization of the essential uses concept. An open public consultation has been launched on 20 January and will be open until mid-April. 4
