There was no statement for your services in this letter, however if you will forward a bill we will return a check to you promptly. fCCc/.t's /-r *' t There was a similarity of names on two of the men H I H H H W ) to which you refer, this similarity un doubtedly caused some confusion because both of these men were lead spray painters and both had been analyzed previously. How ever, had complained of severe abdominal cramps and was hospitalized by Dr. Siegel. Dr. Siegel asked for a lead analysis to rule out the possibility of lead poisoning. In the case of we were quite dis turbed to find the report t n a ^ y o ^ m a a e i n March 1947 was high, particularly because this man had been off the job for a whole year, and that the worker who took his place had shown no in crease in lead level for that year. After receiving your report we checked again and found that the man ate his lunch at the lead bench contrary to previous instructions. This condition has been corrected, the man is now given ample time to wash before eating, he has stopped smoking at the bench and we have provided a new type ventilator that reaches within 6 inches of the work. Vie are running aerial tests on this ventilator and will advise you of the results. We have valued your past associations and have tried to make our records fully available to you. The x-esults on on the contrary, showed nothing of consequence. The present results, with respect t o c o n f i r m those pre viously obtained, in demonstrating that his recent lead exposure has not been of the hazardous type- In the case of Boschenreither the low value obtained on the urine is nob to be taken too seriously in view of the continued elevation of thelead concentration in the blood^^Itlryh^Ishould point out to you that in the case of a man l i k e w h o s e lead exposure has gone on over a considerable periocT of time, it is not to be supposed that there would be any significant change in the findings after only a month, even if he had been removed completely from all exposure. It takes months to eliminate lead from the body, when it has accumulated therein over a period of months or years * In general, a man whose lead exposure has lasted over a period of years would require six or eight months to reduce the lead content of his body to the point where the analytical findings would approach normal values. In this instance the low value found in the urine is merely the result of chance variation, since the results obtained on the urine from hour to hour and from day to day may vary quite significantly. I am writing these words to you rather than to Lr. Siegel, since I have no way of telling what the relationships of your company are to Dr. Siegel. If he is your company physician, and if he makes clinical observations on these men, he should send me the clinical information that he has for our records, since otherwise we are not obtaining the Information that we should have. As I pointed out to you originally, this is a research laboratory, and while we are willing to be helpful, our work of this sort is conducted primarily to obtain information. Therefore, If clinical information is available, we shall insist on having it in the future. If Dr. Siegel merely collects these samples for you at your- request, it is a different matter. I make these comments not only because of the necessity of our obtaining as much useful Information as we can, but also because all information of this type is medical information and it should be handled between medical men.
