Ryan Subject: Depressuring VCM Tank Cars Materials Handling personnel have conducted a three-month survey on depressuring VCM tank cars In order to repair valves, etc. The following information was obtained: 289 - cars loaded 86 - cars depressured prior to loading (305t of total cars loaded) Each depressured car will normally contain VCM vapor at the pressure of the storage sphere, and therefore represents a loss of about 800 pounds of recoverable VCM. This loss is about $15,000 per year based on the Incremental cost of raw materials, 138 MM pounds per year production rate, and regular size tank cars. Plant Engineering has designed a vent line from the storage spheres to the production unit. Tie-In to this line is planned to recover a major portion of this VCM.
